coccidiosis and worms - how should I manage the run?

Does anyone have any suggestions about what to do with a chicken run when you are managing an outbreak of coccidiosis and worms? I'm heard of liming it, but is that a good thing for chickens, to walk on lime? Does lime cut back on the eggs of the coccidia and the worms? Any suggestions? I'm treating for coccidiosis right now, after losing 6 out of 14 chicks between 10-14 weeks. They're on the 6th day of treatment. After day 10, I'm going to start the de-worming. I have a hen on eggs due to hatch on the 19th, so would like to get the run cleaned up somehow. I'll be cleaning the coop as well, but that's easier to manage than a 50' x 14' run.

Are you using sulmet as treatment for coccidia? The 6th day is the final day to treat using that product. Using more after the 6th day can cause toxicity in your chicks. It is too early to worm your chicks. Their innards are still developing and growing, you dont want to be pouring alot of chemicals into them during this stage of development. I recommend you mix scrambled egg and buttermilk in their feed to make a mash and give it to them to eat, to help restore good bacteria after the cocci treatment. If you need to worm them, I would wait til the 5th month.
You would be better off hauling sand into your run, rather than using lime. The key is keeping their run as dry as possible to keep down the parasite load; cocci, worms and flies. Even if you limed the soil, eventually the parasites will return. When it rains, the sand will absorb it and dry quicker and there is no run off. A cubic yard of sand cost me $25 each. My run is about the same size as yours...5 cubic yards should do it for you. The sand will last you a long time is easier to scoop poop as well.

thanks for this response. I am using amprol for the coccidia. And the recommendations I've read are for about 2 weeks, or 10 days. I'm choosing the 10 days, because they're responding well and were not sick to start with, and I thought I should get on with the de-worming. I'm going to continue this in a new post, under a different subject line, as I'm interested in hearing more ideas. You sound very knowledgeable and I'm taking your response seriously, but do want to hear from others, and will explain my situation in more detail in the new posting. Thanks!!
