I'm starting a new discussion since the old discussion was frozen by moderators due to an unfortunate comment. Please, keep this civil. All topics concerning chickens, raising chicks, processing meat birds and even gardineg and composting are fine but please, let's keep this friendly and fun. Because I'm starting it ( thanks Beekissed for the first one) I have one other request. It seems that many of our old timers have an organic approach to raising chickens. So, let's continue that organic trend, with the pros/cons of raising chickens organically. No Monsanto political discussions, that belongs elsewhere but just basic discussions on how our flocks can and do survive without toxic chemicals. Because, "better living through chemicals" isn't always better. I'd like to see us continue our discussions of improving the immune system through breeding, organic methods of deworming ( this can include processing or culling chickens that aren't hardy enough) and thoughts about chemicals used for external parasite control.
I'd also like to see if we can begin to discuss some garden and farm management, since poultry ( chickens, ducks, peafowl, guineas) are frequently a part of a larger organic system, especially when it comes to insect control and fertilizer.
Finally, to keep this on the topic of Old Timers helping the newcomers, and to help keep this thread open, let's try something. When you start your post, please state your forum name, number of years in poultry/type of poultry at the beginning of the post. Sort of like a twelve step meeting, lol.

Example:
Tracydr, 25 years raising chickens, peafowl, guineas and a few ducks, pigeon, quails.
Then, go on with your question, statement or answer to somebody else's question.

Let's try to keep this on topic. There may be some gruesome pictures, some talk of killing, processing, culling of undesirable traits. But, let's not get sidetracked talking about chicken sweaters and other modern-day accoutrements that are certainly not a necessary part of chicken or farm management.
Most importantly, let's have fun and learn from each other!

Did you happen to save any of the information from the last thread? It got deleted and is no longer accessible and some of us on here would like to keep that info that we didn't get to see before.

I have not the years behind me raising chickens that are mostly wanted, but I'm at least an old timer in age. One thing old timers agree on though, is to OBSERVE. Yep, watch them. They'll tell you lots of things. Learn to really see what's going on. Rooster topping a hen is just that, but there can be details you need to see. Make sure she's raising her tail enough, see how rough he is, on and on.

Lets try not to be derogatory towards others here but still have some good old gruff knowledge.

Bobbi-J, 29 years (off and on) - turkeys for a short time, chickens mostly.

Thank you Tracydr. Hopefully this will not be considered reopening a closed thread (against the rules). Funny thing about the whole "organic" movement. My MIL and so many other farm wives 50 or more years ago raised "organic" chickens before there a name for them! No one used chemicals, anitbiotics, or took their chickens to the vet. I raise mine the same way. Not to be organic as such, but that's how I do it. If a chicken is sick or injured and I don't think it's going to get better, I put it out of its misery (well, I have DH do that). I tried a few times to make them better and realized the hard way that I was just making them suffer longer. If it doesn't appear to be suffering, and just not quite right, I'll let it be. One of two things will happen. It will get better, or it will die. Another observation about the way chickens were raised back in the day. I don't think all the maladies that affect our birds now were ever an issue. DH doesn't remember his mom's chickens ever having worms, parasites, being egg bound or any of the other things that seem to be prevalent now. Mine don't either for that matter.

I hope the OT's that participated in the earlier thread will come back and join us here. I love the good, old-fashioned wisdom that they share.

ETA Just thought I'd share why I no longer raise turkeys. We farm. My turkeys were free-ranged. You know how turkeys like shiny things? Well, when DH works on machinery, he lays the parts out on the ground in the order in which he removes them from said machinery. My turkeys would snatch the parts and run off with them!

DH didn't see the humor in that. I'm no longer allowed to have them....

I'm really sorry to hear the other thread was closed and deleted. I had planned on going back and re-reading it since there was so much helpful information and wisdom there.

Please be patient.
It will not bring the world to an end if you have to wait a few hours to have this issue discussed among the staff.
