Solar power for my coop - I wanna be Green

My chickens house was using too much electricity so over time I developed a
plan to make a "Green" chicken coop with a minimal carbon footprint.

The first thing I did was put a 400 watt solar panel on the roof that charges a
battery in the afternoons. This battery then goes through an invertor and provides
most of the light I need for the chickens.

The next thing I did was buy a solar ventilation fan at Costco that moves the
air around and keeps it cool for the birds.

Finally I plumbed in a an old 55 gallon barrel that I put all the poop in. The poop
creates methane that goes through a propane pilot light and burns off, thereby
decreasing the amount of methane, a know greenhouse gas, from going into
the air.

Finally I replaced all the normal bulbs in the coup with compact flourescent bulbs.
The chickens seem ok with it and continue to lay a good amount of eggs, reducing
the carbon trail required to deliver eggs to my fridge.

Nex week I plan to, Oh nevermind.

YOU ARE A FREAK!

I almost NEVER use the lights in the coop. We do have elect out there, I just plugged in a mosquito trap on Wednesday and thats pretty much all we run.

Winter they keep emselves warm.

I'd love to have a solar panel - for ourselves not the chickens - LOL heck I'd even love a little wood burning stove in here - I just gotta whine more.

Wood burning stoves put too much particulate pollution into the air. If we all
used wood for fuel all the trees in the US would be gone in 10 years.

Solar panels that make electricity are expensive. A setup that provides 1000 watts
runs thousands of dollars.

I've been taking yoga lately. It allows me to slow me breathing and produce
less carbon dioxide. I'm also part of a group called nmcf, an organization dedicated
to reducing the amount of methane produced from cattle.

You could also use the methane set up to heat a water heater. also a deep compost hole could add to your savings. the power of natural energy is all around us.

I think you are being sarcastic and not taking me seriously. This is an important
issue. I couldn't possibly generate energy from the methane that comes out of my
chickens but I can burn it off preventing it from causing global warming. Do you have
any idea how hot it was today here?

Good idea. I just already own and invertor so I use it. You are right. Using a 12volt
bulb would reduce the heat loss created by the invertor.
