Wry neck?????help

I have a 3 1/2 week old silkie who has always been a little 'different'. She's a little smaller than her litter mates, last to hatch. The biggest thing is that she frequently 'peeps', (by frequently I mean most of the time). This morning when I checked her, her neck is completely twisted, she's looking skyward. Unable to maintain her balance, occasionally peeps and moves her whole body, but mostly just laying there with her head all twisted. I've separated her, able to give her a little water, but no food. my gut reaction is to let nature take it's course. I know some people have had luck with vitamins, but since 'pez' has acted wrong since hatching I'm afraid it's more neurological than just vitamin related. What do you guys think?

I am facing the same dilemma! Except I have 3 chicks with issues

The one with the neck that could only turn one way and now seems ok other than when it's spooked it runs backwards in circles (

) , I have another that has a head tremor/bobble that just got started on vitamins and then there is the chick with totally different issues. It stands with one foot forward and one backward. When it hatched both legs just went forward and it couldn't stand well. I used the bandaid and it seemed ok, but now has a diagonal stance

and peeps CONSTANTLY, and has pasty butt, bad. I have an infirmary and would ask dh to cull but I feel bad asking him to do it, cuz he believes they deserve a chance. I think they are all brain damaged, but with over 100 chicks (75 in the basement still, 3 brooders) I am feeling less sensitive, so I know what you mean about "letting nature takes it course". good luck with your decision. btw, I am doing the vitamin thing and got an electrolyte/vitamin additive for their water

My Ruth was the same way, at the same age, and nearly died. She is alive and well a year and half later and having beautiful baby EE chicks.

I gave her Poly-Vi-Sol drops and a Vitamin E capsule daily and held her to hold her head straight so she could eat. Fed her lots of scrambled eggs. Just cut the top off the Vit. E capsule and squeeze out goop and let her eat it.

A lot of twisted neck/wry neck is a vitamin deficiency/malabsoprtion issue and can be corrected with proper vitamins and high protein feed. There are many on here who will attest to that and have successfully cured their little twisted neck, spin in circles chicks like Ruth.
 
I think the thing that concerns me is that 'pez' has always cried. She peeped constantly before this happened...she's always struck me as a chick with issues. If this were one of the other chicks I think that I'd be more proactive, poor pez has seemed unhappy or brain injured from the start.
 
I also had a silkie with wry neck, she was about 2 weeks old. Since this is my first experience with chickens I had no idea about the poly vi sol vitamins. However, she wouldn't eat or drink and peeped constantly and ultimately my husband cullled her for me. I was heartbroken-so were my kids. You could try the vitamins but with so many chicks to care for you may not want to.

Thanks for the kind words. no one here will let me cull the poor thing, i could fight my kids.....i've told them that part of being a responsible livestock owner means making hard decisions and making sure the chickens don't suffer. unfortunately, my mom also wants to let nature take it's course, she has the little one in her house and is nursing it. I've got to give her credit. it just breaks my heart though. I've been so lucky so far, since spring I've brooded over 40 chicks, this will be my first brush with illness. I can't believe how quickly this came on, the day before yesterday pez was running around (peeping loudly as usual) and then overnight her poor little body contorted. I don't know if she's seizing as well or if the sudden spasms are her attempt at righting herself. please pray for a quick passing for my little one!
 
When you are speaking of wry or crook neck in silkies then it may have been pecked. Often in head injury cases the vitamins plus vitE/selenium combo are not enough and you will need prednisone ... print out the following article (incl the photos of the "hole" in the skull) and take it to your vet... this is a well known issue in silkies and the treatment in the following article with prednisone/vit B/ vitEand selenium combo (make sure the selenium content does nOT exceed 50 micrograms) is very effective... the prednisone is for the brain inflammation

(you should be able to consult any vet for this med...it is not expensive. Take along a video of your chick and include the video of the chick incl in the thread in the link above...it was treated successfully with the treatment)
