Araucanas/Americanas...which one has a Muff??

Sorry everyone! i just realized i posted in the wrong forum & i dont know how or if i can remove the other post. So here it is...

Tonight I bought 2 easter egg chickens. 1 for sure roo and 1 that was supposed to be a hen...but i think hes a roo too. anyways, the one i will keep has a Muff & not just cheek poofs. which breed is this? i know theyre purebred the feed store gets theirs from McMurray...hes just gorgeous. They are both blues with red wings...and a few other colors. the roo i will keep has white hackle feathers. I will have a picture up soon....of both of them. Thanks everyone!
 
Well, McMurray only sells Easter Eggers, not Ameraucanas and not Araucanas. They usually have beards and muffs, but not tufts like the Araucana. Easter eggers are a mixed breed, not pure and can lay any color eggs, though often they are green or blue.
See the blue Ameraucana on the right in the pic? She is a true Ameraucana and has a beard and muffs. The wheaten colored one in the center with blue feathers here and there is an Easter Egger, who also has beard and muffs (not tufts).

Hi everyone, I'm new to chicken ownership. Are you determining the difference between the two pictures because of the coloring and the blue having more of a prominent muff so to speak? The one you said is an Easter Egger looks very much like the 3 that I recently purchased and was told they are Ameraucanas. The gal I got them from as pullets never did tell me what hatchery they are from. I would post a picture or two of them if I could figure out how!

No. Color yes, but not the muffs. Ameraucanas must have only certain accepted colors, plus the true breed has slate legs, white skin and reddish bay eyes. And they should only lay eggs in blue or greenish blue, never brown or pinky tan like some Easter Eggers, a sure sign of mixed blood. On occasion the eyes of some lines will be darker than they should, but they can only have one of 8 colors: White, Buff, Black, Blue, Silver, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten and Brown Red.

Thanks, marymac. I adore my Ameraucanas and never tire of looking at the dark cherry color of these RIRS.

My Easter Egger girl, June, came from an Ameraucana breeder, so she is probably the result of breeding two different color Ameraucanas, but I cant be sure and since she is a non-standard color, I call her an Easter Egger.​

What does everyone think he is? Ameraucanas or just EE?

EE. You did post he was from a hatchery and all hatcheries carry Easter Eggers, although they SAY the have Ameraucanas and Araucanas......they do not, you can only get those from True Breeders. Although he is a lovely EE!
 
Yes, Easter Egger. He's not one of the following colors (White, Buff, Black, Blue, Silver, Wheaten, Blue Wheaten and Brown Red)
and look at his legs to check the color. If green, you have your answer; though they dont always have green legs, they often do, a dead giveaway most of the time.
