Forgot to mention this line of crap he handed me too.

Domestic animals are dogs cats and parekeets, You can have any combination of three. Thats it. NO exotic animals. Hamsters, parrots, snakes. And no farm animals unless you live on 40 acres. There is no such thing as a 40 plot in Bangor anymore. I WANT TO MOVE TO CANADA

iluvcks, I am so sorry to hear about your chicken problems. I will keep you in my prayers that all will work out for you and your chickens.

My brother in law was just told the same thing so I told him about the right to farm act and gave him the link to the BYC site pertaining to that. He has had his birds for a few years and is really loves his goose. The issue there got started because the neighbors complained, the same neighbors also allow their very large dogs run loose.

That's why I'll never voluntarily live within a cities' boundaries, even a small town's. Too many people got their nose in your business. I've heard horror stories from my Dad's friends who still live in urban areas having the cops called on them because their grass was an inch too high. The best part is these people are usually causing much more serious violations of city code, but it's okay for them- just not you. And you're right, the line of crap that guy tried to force feed you sounds like horse manure to me (I'm sure Soldan's would be interested in knowing they're selling reptile contrabond. And you need 40 acres to own poultry? Don't think so.).

I'm sorry to say you probably won't win (I know Bay City is run by vegetables, and I've driven through Bangor township enough to know that a lot of its residents have their nose up so high it causes a serious lack of oxygen to the brain), but you can make them absolutely miserable, and less inclined to harass someone over such a trivial matter. I'm glad you're obtaining your "hit list"; any meager, minor violation your "good" neighbors make of local laws, call the authorities on them - consistently, constantly, anonymously. Not very nice, but they obviously weren't.

You know with the right modifications a basement could be a pretty nice place for chickens to live.
Some grow lamps on the ceiling, lay down some sod and grow grass, all you'd need are roosts and a nest box. No fleas, predators, wild birds, etc.
Ok so it would be harder than that, but probably doable.
I would still fight back against the city. Find everything you can to defend your right to own chickens and take your supporters tot he next town hall meeting to let them know how you and other people feel.

Maybe you and the others who are capable can buy up a lot of chickens and stage a chicken owning protest. Have a running the the chickens through the center of town!
Yeah I'm being silly now.

I'm sorry you have to fight against the city to keep your birds. It isn't fair and it certainly shouldn't be tolerated.

Yeah except then big brother will raid your home because of the spike in your ele bill... they'll try to bust you for growing pot in the basement with the lights!

B*****ds!

Good luck in the good fight!

I can't understand how a city or township think they have the right to superseed state or federal laws.

If mine tried to do that to me, I'd be trying to move.

Thank you everyone for your support. I am getting the "list" today. I will go door to door if I have to to get people to sign. I will send a postcard to everyperson on my petition for a personal invite to the town meeting. These twp people can't come into my home without a warrent right? and would they really get a warrent for chickens? There is no way I can get rid of Gabby. Shes been living in the house since December.

I didn't even sleep last night. Just kept running this whole thing thru my head over and over. I am sure a close neighbor called and complained. The sounds of summer around here is her yelling obsenities at her 6 yr old daughter and 4 year old twin boys. I can't wait to unleash on her next time her shrill voice is echoing thoughout the neighborhood.

I also plan on recording my hens egg songs, and maybe even the roosters. We are attaching the recording to a megaphone to a 25ft light pole in our driveway. The plan is to play it from noon to 3:00 pm. You see we love the sound so much and miss it terriably now that they are gone. LOL

My ten year old asked last night what the worst case senerio is. I said "we have to get rid of all the birds, and I spend a night in jail." My daughter says "what will happen to us?" DH is wondering how much bail $ he'll need to get me out. LOL

iluvcks,

If you can afford it, hire an attorney to do a little research, draft a well worded warning letter to the city that you will fight this and you have state law with precedence on your side. In other words, other cities and towns have tried to fight it and have lost! If you can't afford an attorney, do some research your self, look up the cases, show where other towns and cities have tried to enforce their codes and ordinances but state law trumps it and they have lost. They may back down! It is worth a shot! Fight the good fight, you are right, they are wrong!!

Big Brother can do what ever he wants.... unfortunatly.

One thing I wouldn't do is broad cast anything over a PA.. you'll get nailed for disturbing the peace. You don't want to add any fuel to their fire and just cause you love chicken sounds, doesn't mean someone else will.

I'd rally support, but don't draw negative attention to yourself!
