BYC Chat - Saying Goodbye to an old friend

I have to say i have never been in a chat session that was not family rated.

I have seen the very young go way off topic and when I was there I always tried to gear it back to critters.

But we have many boards in the forums for off chicken topics, and can not agree that being "off topic" in chat was a bad thing.

I have used the internet since before public internet (for those oldies out there BBS) and in almost every form of chat I have encountered there were people chosen to "moderate" the chat rooms.
I myself used to be a IRC moderator for a ISP and know it can be a hassle at times but the things I saw in BYC chat never got close to being a large problem. Now I'm not on 24/7 and I don't see everything so I'm not saying nothing happened etc but it would be very easy to setup base rules and pick a few moderators from the poeple who use the chat that were adults and could help control any issues.

If it was just a resource issue just say so as many of us would understand that.
since live chat is a large system drain at times maybe limit the number in the room?
I would love to see it back as I have met many people in chat that I never would have talked to on the forums since we do not watch the same threads.

I think it was a reasonable decision on the part of the mods and administrators of BYC, personally. Chats can foster lasting friendships, but more often they can cause all sorts of issues--especially on a site where there are minors out and about and there is always concern about keeping the site family friendly. I grew up using the internet and am quite comfortable chatting with people online (I am also not easily offended at all), but on the few occasions that I ventured into the chat the topics were generally not animal-related and I felt rather left out of the silly banter that was going on. I know that doesn't describe everyone's chat experiences, especially more regular users, but that was my experience anyhow.

I would argue that there is little need for a chat on a chicken website. The forums by themselves create great social opportunities and there is always the PM system or off-site chats (AIM, Yahoo Messenger, and multiple chatting sites, to name a few) if people want to discuss things a bit more personally or get to know each other better. One could even set up an off-site BYC chat if they miss the BYC chat and want to keep it going, so to speak. Even in emergencies, usually someone will answer a thread pretty promptly and even if they don't, one can search the forums and/or look at what users are online and send PMs to active users.

It's too bad that some users will miss the chat, but I must confess I won't be one of them.

Thanks for the very calm and collected discussion. While the decision isn't up for debate, we recognize that a good number of members are affected by the decision.

Please keep in mind that this is probably the only feature we've had to remove over the past 4 years... this is even more impressive considering the hundreds of other changes and improvements we've made, many at our member's request, over that same time frame.

We appreciate those that recognize that managing a community of over 75,000 members does not present us with very many "please all people all the time" options. As very experienced community managers we are often forced with hard decisions, and this was one of them.

On a personal note: I too am sad to see chat go. There were aspects of it that I loved greatly, which is why it was one of the first things I added when the site was re-launched. With that said, I have the unique perspective to see the other side of chat, and with that perceptive combined with my love of the community, understood that a hard decision had to be made for the long term growth and stability of our fantastic community.

Oh, did I mention it was a hard decision with lengthy discussion of many pros and cons that wasn't taken lightly?

What i dont understand is why everyone that supports there not being chat, has either never been on there or has very limited experiences on there. I was on there all of the time and there were people on there that would come in and ask questions and no matter what was going on someone would answer them. I think that it is a great loss to the site it was a place where new comers could come to get a quick response to their answer or just to talk. I think that if the Moderation staff was needing some help moderating the chat room all they needed to do was ask. I don't understand why people are complaining that when they came in there that nobody was talking about chickens that happens alot in this forum, I mean have you ever seen the random ramblings forum???
