So I don't know what to do with all of those eggs under the silkie. How long before I can tell if they're fertile? This is the first time we have had a broody chicken so we need help please!!

Well now that our friend's chicks are about a month old, I'm not so sure on the breeds. 8 were pulled from the braham bin, but only 2 really look like brahmas to me.
Here's a pic of one of the other 6, they are all black with a little white here and there, a few have some pretty long tail feathers. I'm pretty sure this is a rooster to be.

The other two are from the mixed Red Pullet bin, so I haven't had any clue as to what they are. This cutie, who sat calmly in my lap for her picture, is one of three:

And this one is the only one of her breed. (I'm supposing it's a she since it came from the pullet bin).

Any ideas on what kinda chicks I have here?

Ferret, the last one definitely looks like an isa brown to me. The black one looks like my wyandotte.

Congrats Jen!

So this weekend we're going to my friend's who has a HUGE old barn that the top half finally caved in. I've been waiting for this moment. Plan is to go there tomorrow and start picking up the wood. Aric and I (ok mostly Aric lol) is going to start making things out of it. He can make anything!! He wants to start with outhouses because surprisingly people will pay a LOT of money for them. He's also looking into dog houses, chicken coops and whatever else. I'll take the scraps to make picture frames. I'm SOOO excited!!! It's gonna give us something fun to do together all summer...and make some great money too!!

As I gathered egg today I remembered that it is April Fools day. Given the number of eggs I've been getting lately it seems appropriate. The year started out slow with only 22 eggs for the first 15 days of the year. Then they started to kick into gear I I thought I was going to be all set. 30 hens and I was getting 14 to 18 eggs per day. Then about 2 weeks ago it dropped to 7 for about a week. Then the last several days I've only gotten 2 each day. Next week I'm splitting the birds into the rainbow flock, the welsummer flock, and 3 bantam breeds. Hopefully between the change of occupancy and the increasing daylight they will start laying better.

A2sciteach, they are downright adorable!

I can't get too attached since they technically aren't mine.

I'm not sure when we're moving them out to our friends farm, maybe at the end of the month or into May.
Kyet, I did look up pics of different breeds and started to figure the last one is an Isa. I had no idea what to call the lil black and white ones, but you might be right about them being wyandottes. I'm beginning to think the other three reds are buff orpingtons based on their color mostly.
Thanks for helping me identify them!

Anybody want a broody Australorp hen?
roll.png
It wouldn't be a problem if she'd make her own nest. Instead she has taken up residence right next to -- and when I say right next to I mean literally squashed up against -- my broody goose in the coop. And not only that they're soliciting the other hens to keep giving them eggs so everyday I have to go out, kick the chicken out, lift up the goose and sit her beside the nest, clean out all the chicken eggs and then put the goose eggs all back in the part of the enormous nest the goose is sitting in and then put the goose back on top of them. By the next day it's time to do it all over again. AND because I don't know how long they've been sitting on the chicken eggs in the nest by the time I get out there in the afternoon I'm having to toss all of those -- don't want to sell eating eggs with even the slightest bit of development

-- the hogs eat them, but still. Stupid chicken. She's also keeping the goose eggs that she steals to sit on warmer than the goose is keeping the goose eggs, noticeably so... we'll see what comes of that.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, maybe I'll confine her to a crate or something with a clutch of her own and see if she can actually make herself useful rather than just being a PITA.

Especially since my head roo seems to have a death wish and I suspect we'll be without fertile eggs for a bit until the next generation gets up there. He keeps sneaking up on and attacking my tom turkey. The turkey is three times his size and kicks his behind every time but the roo just can't take a hint. He will pretend he's walking away and then when the tom turns his back he starts running up behind him, the tom turns and sees him and the roo pretends he'd just picking at the grass eating, tom turns around again and the roo jumps him and then gets his behind kicked. Over and over and over again. One of these times the Tom is going to stop being so tolerant and I can't blame him one bit.

It must be spring! They're all feelin' FRISKY!

Fife -- Neat. Can't wait to see pics.

Ferret -- The first one is an Australorp cockerel. The second picture looks like the white balance is off, what color is the chicken IRL? And I agree with Keyt on the last one looking like an ISA Brown.

Jen -- 'grats on your barn!

Keyt -- Old barn wood?! That's awesome! Have fun with it.

Opa -- Hopefully they get back to laying for you soon. Any idea why they might be slowing down?

Finally April first!! Today would have been my mama's 68th birthday. I spent the day with my childhood friend. My mama would have been pleased that we found each other as she really liked this particular friend a lot. It has been a wonderful day today.

Olive, don't you know that I have been wanting one of my hens to go broody??? I think I have one but she keeps getting kicked out of the nest as she is in the favorite nest box. I have plans to build a broody box this weekend.

The second chick is a light orange/beige color.
I think almost all of the little black and white ones are cockerels, with a slim chance that one or two are pullets. The one pictured has the most red in his comb/face though.
