I have four showgirl chicks that are 12 weeks old (i think? they may have been born in january or february). I am seriously doubting their henly-ness right now based on the fact that besides the one that is an obvious roo, they all seem to be growing streamers. Also they are all showing some red in their faces, mostly around the eyes and mouth.

I was wondering about their colors as well. I know showgirls and silkies are tough to sex, but any help would be 100% appreciated. thanks!

Here is #1 and the only one with a name. Little peg leg is a cripple, so i will be devistated if i have to give her up for being a him. I didnt think she was growing streamers until about a week ago when i noticed some longer feathers that are tipped in white. I do not have the best camera in the world, but if you look closely you can see them. She may be one or two weeks younger than the others. When she was a chick i thought for sure she was going to be partridge, but now she looks grey with a weird wing pattern. what is it?

here is #2. Very obviously a boy. What is his color?

#3 has the largest crest so far. Very puffy but has got some little grey streamers

what do you think? and what is this color? is it just a mess? i think its beautiful. Its also got these two feathers coming in just above the eyes that look like old man eyebrows.

thanks for any help!

The only one that's screaming roo to me is the white one. The others it's still too early to tell. What you see as streamers look like pin feathers coming in to me. Can't help ya on the color.....the two buff looking ones may be porcelain though! I love mine, she's my favorite!

I only see one obvious male. Often they will look like they are getting 'streamers' but they aren't. I hatched out a batch of blues last year and thought all were boys,... all 'appeared' to have streamers. I ended up with 4 males, 2 females.

I really only see one obvious boy... the rest are a toss-up. I raise a lot of silkies and a fair number of SG, so I'm not talking out of my backside. I'm not the best sexer, but I really think you need more time to know what all but the black and white boy are.

oh good, thanks so much. Ive been so worried with all those long crest feathers coming in. i was really hoping that since they dont look ANYTHING like the boy, maybe they are girls based on that alone... phew! shall give it more time, but you know how easy it is to worry

Sorry I hope you won't take this as being rude. I am new to chickens and have never heard of showgirl silkies before. But they remind me of what I would think a baby Skeksis might have looked like. You probably think I am coming out of nowhere. But I am a big Jim Henson fan, and I love his film "The Dark Crystal" out of all the muppet type work he created. His Skeksis were some of the most awesome villians ever. And your baby chicks would have made some awesome muppets. I never knew such a cool breed existed.
Sorry I can't help you on identifying gender. But I just wanted to make a comment about your chicks.
Thanks.

I love your show girls! They do look like Muppets, especially all together. I hope to get a handful some day. Hopefully you've got more hens than roos in there.

those chickens are so ugly they're cute. i am new and have no idea about gender or color but wanted to thank you for posting the pictures. will they grow feathers on their necks or are they the naked neck kind?
