Garden Dried Up, Weeds Took Over, Chickens' Delight! (Pics)

Isaac isn't doing well in this heat--he almost died today, turned purple gasping for air. He was trotting beside me while we were taking the main flock back to the pen after free ranging (should have done it earlier than I did). They went in the gate, I threw some scratch and when I turned around, he had stopped short of the gate and was turning purple and gasping for air. We rushed him to the hose and wet him down to cool him off. In a minute or so, his color came back and his breathing returned to normal. He doesn't do well in combined heat and high humidity like we've had for the past two months and like we're expecting for the forseeable future.

I'm so sorry that happened to Isaac! I hope he fares better in the coming days. This summer has been so brutal, especially in the south. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there is some much-needed rain soon.

On a happier note, your flock looks like they were having a grand time in your weed garden. That's all I can seem to grow this year... Nothing but crab grass.

Good thing you caught Isaac in time! Heat is pretty brutal for chickens but not for chicks! Got those ten fuzzbutts for the broody mom and for the first time, she rejected them after two months being broody. She had successfully reared three clutches of chicks, not her own or my birds but hatchery. I am so mad but understand that she probably is tired and hot. Just flat out rejected them. Been broody for almost over two months. I am going to give her a break this year. Now I got those chicks, gotta sell them ASAP! Hating the chicks in the basement but I can let them outside in the 90's for the day and bring them in at night.

aawwwwwwww they enjoyed that. and OMG I SEE A TERRORIST in that picture. hehehehe and look at Ike that handsome boy.

the3ofus+oursixchicks :

those are some beautful varieties of chickens. what kind are they all?

Thank you! I love the variety in the laying flock, but I'm partial to the Rocks and Ameraucanas. The laying flock here consists of mostly Plymouth Rocks, both barred and blues plus a black Rock girl, then there are blue, black and splash Ameraucanas, a few Easter Eggers, a couple of other mixed breeds, and the white ones are Delawares. I have Buff and Blue Orpingtons and some others in two other flocks, but since they have their own roosters, they can't be out at the same time as Isaac's group.

Yes, LH, you see the Tiny Terrorist. She can't see well, but she must manage to get a few things in her mouth with Ike's help. She follows him everywhere when she can't see the humans around.
