American serama thread!

I don't think everyone on BYC has the intention of being a serious breeder. Some of us like to just raise a few chicks and just enjoy them.

I'm not saying you're wrong though. If I wanted to start really breeding and selling Serama, I'd get a better pair that what I have now.

I've got 8 in the bator now that are from the chickens that Jerry sent me...........I can't wait to see them. Hope all goes well as it is the first time I have used an incubator but I bought the Brinsea Mini Advance Ex which is supposed to be a set it and forget it incubator. So far, it has held temp and humidity perfectly for several days. I have set a 45% humidity because the recommended was between 40 & 50. Does that seem OK?

Chicklette 1 I bought a Genesis 1588 to hatch my eggs from Jerry. I also bought with it a 15.00 hygrometer. Humidity around 50% first 16 days then added more water to up it to 60%.. The temp. was preset at 99.5 and the chicks hatched day 19 and 20. Be prepared cause they can hatch early!

And they were eating wet feed in just a few hours of hatching! Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up on the number of hatching days and I can adjust the humidity up but this has a built in read out of temp and humidity constantly and they said not to rely on other thermometers or hygrometers so I've just tried to do everything as they suggested but I will raise the humidity to 50%. If they hatch early, I'll be ready with the brooder as set and tested for temp. Thanks again for the comeback.

Lilchick, a lot of us don't have the money to buy Jerry's eggs or Jerry's birds if we want to. Happy for you that you do. THis is a fun forum. So I will continue to have fun with pet birds.

My little black Frizzle keeps giving me eggs every other day or so and now that I've got the bator already going (I added 2 eggs already), I don't know what to do with the eggs..........I hate to waste them!!

Your dogs and chickens would love to have them as scrambled eggs if you don't feel you can eat them. I also crush the shells and feed back to my birds. But they have a treat of scrambled at least once a week. The dogs get them a couple of times a week.

I have a few birds that I will not hatch from and 1 that has never been fertile, there are sometimes also eggs that were in the heat too long and eggs that are too dirty for me to want to mess with.....so they go in the dog/chicken bowl for scrambling day.
