A pair of scissors to the neck is the best IMO.
Humane way to put down chick?

I just couldnt stand to hold it and cut the neck. Me and my mom bawled our eyes out over the poor guy. I hate it!
I don't think the scissors thing is for me - how hard is it to snip through the spine??? I'd prefer to do probably a papersack and plastic back with a shovel.

Just leave them in the hatcher...trust me, Mother nature will cull it quickly-within 24 hours. I think there are some real psychopaths on here...all these scissors (and on the other boards people wanting to do at home chicken surgeries!)...ACK! LOL....Also a baggie and the freezer....quietly goes to sleep, no trauma. Why do I hesitate taking off heads??? Go look at the video of Mike the Headless Chicken on YouTube (yes its real)...then try to pick up those scissors....eeeek!

Pretty sure you can find some people who'd say shoving a chick in a bag and throwing it in the freezer to suffocate and freeze to death, whichever comes first, would be no less psychopathic than the scissors. Seems that might be easier on the person rather than the chick.

I would never use the freezer method - its a long and slow way to go, and most likely involves degrees of pain and discomfort at different stages, depending on how weak the animal is when placed in there. When you decapitate a chicken properly (Mike the headless chicken was not a real decapitation), its super quick, and blood loss to the brain makes then unconscious almost immediately.

Oh my HEAVENS I've never read so many ghastly ways to kill something being called "Humane." If you want to put them in a plastic bag and throw them in the freezer you're saving yourself from watching it die is all your doing, and causing it to die in a horrid way all to save yourself.
