Ok, so my daughter took some photos of our one week candling. (Forgive some of the blur....she IS only 8 you know!) I would like fellow hatchers opinions on the eggs (if they are good or bad, and if they look on track for their "age") Today is (was) the end of Day 7. We chose eggs to candle at random. Here are 17 of our 36 in the bator (13 are really dark eggs so I have no luck candling them, and 6 more are some kind of Ameraucana eggs and the shells are too dence to candle well). I've put our guess on how they are doing above each photo. How did we do?

Unsure- great veining, but not as formed as other darker eggs?

Unsure- again, great veining, but no real dark spot?

I hope we did good, because we swear we saw a little heartbeating in one of the good eggs! Please tell me we were right!

Looks good. I would go ahead and leave everybody in there till day 14 at least. There always the slow ones too. Here are some eggs I candled but I don't remember how old they were. I think day 10 since I rarely look before then. I did also have a VERY high powered and direct light source so in real life, you could see through the embryo.... and thus with a regular light, it would appear darker than shows up in these pics.

Sorry they are so big... If it's too big I can just change them all to links instead.

silkiechicken what are you using for a light source? the clarity on those shots is ridiculous! Makes my candling efforts look embarrassing!

Thank you for all the replies.

So, do the eggs I posted here look on track for Day 7 (well, Day 8 today)? Temp holds perfectly at 99.7-100.1 and humidity is at 46%. Thanks all!

About the pictures....

The pictures are from a dissecting lamp that is similar to this one:

With a light guide:

At home I use a Surefire 6P with an upgrade LED. You must use the lithium batteries that fit the flashlight because regular batteries don't fit. There are recharge kits available but they are kind of expensive too.

Here is the body:

And here is the replacement head that can get you 100 lumens of light... to put that to perspective, a 100W incandescent bulb puts off about 500 lumens at an almost 360 deg radius, This lamp will put 1/5 of that 100W bulb into a space the size of a quarter rather than the surface of an orange.

Or you can go with this LED which is a drop in type by wolf eyes but there are other modifications that need to be done and it is 55 bucks... can't seem to find it right now though... To make a clear beam at home, I make a cut out so the egg can rest on top and there is no spill on the sides. It is the spill that makes the eggs hard to see inside of...

Then to get the picture quality. I use a cannon PowerShot A710 IS silver 7.1 MP digital camera on macro mode.

If you got extra egg money, or are spoiled :p, You can't go wrong with the surfire 6p flashlight. It's compact too so I use it as part of my daily carry stuff.
