We bought 6 hens and 1 rooster (no idea what kind they are) three days ago. How long until they lay? And what am I supposed to feeding them? and is straw enough for nests or do they need shavings?

Thanks!

Do you know how old the hens are? I'm a total noobie too!

Welllll.... I know that the guy we bought them from said the older ones are about a year and the younger ones 3-5 months. the rooster is HUGE and even tries to coop the rabbit that is with them. Too funny. But I feel like I have no idea what I am doing!

if you've only had them for a few days, give them time to settle in. You'll not get any eggs from 3-month-olds though.

good luck!

They usually begin to lay at around 5 months. Just give it a little time, because if they are nervous from being moved, they quit laying sometimes, too.

You should post pictures if you can. We will help you figure out the breeds

Edited to add: The straw will be fine. They can use either shavings or straw, no matter. Just feed them Flockraiser until you see the first egg. Then you can switch them over to Layena, if you want.
