Checked Petunia this am, couldn't find a crop, so I'm assuming that means it was empty? Breathing was fine until I started palpating her, then she started gasping. When I released her, she joined the others and ate breakfast, but she does sneeze and "peep" when she's eating.
No grit. I always assumed they picked up enough grit free ranging, but I have been keeping them in more lately b/c coyotes are in the neighborhood.
I will check her crop in the am and look for some grit tomorrow.
Thanks!
She's adopted, no idea of her age, but not young.
She laid last summer through fall, but none of my girls other than the yearlings lay much through the winter, although they are starting up again. I do not believe she is laying yet.
No mucous or other drainage, eyes look fine, no swelling...
One of my hens has been intermittently gasping and wheezing for a week or so. She doesn't always do it. What is going on and what can I do for her? I will try and check her crop tomorrow (have never done it).
This sounds awful. None of my other chickens are showing signs - can I vaccinate them now? Do I need a prescription to buy the vaccine?
Also, her leg and wing are not paralyzed, but are not working right - does that make a difference?
Found my oldest barred rock (only 6yrs) on the floor of the coop this am flopping around, unable to right herself. She seems to have right wing and leg weakness, although she is able to move both. I separated her and tried to prop her upright in a box, offered her food and water. She won't...
It’s where the rooster was holding on to her. There’s no open wound, but there seem to be permanent lumps where he grabbed her. She’s had those for quite a while
It's hard to see in these photos, but if you can enlarge the last one, her pupil has a greenish cast. Her good eye has a normal black pupil. Does anyone know of anything I can give her for pain relief? I'm afraid the eye probably has to come out?
Hi everyone,
I have a hen with an injured eye and I'd like some advice on how to relieve her discomfort.
My rooster was beating on her and she started avoiding him, but one night she didn't want to go into the coop and I noticed her eye was only half open with a little thick drainage. I...
Something tried to drag my toulouse goose off her nest last night and broke her wing. There is a small break through the skin, but nothing poking through. Has anyone treated this? I took a goose with a broken wing to the vet once and surgery was over 2K and the only vet that will do it is...
So yesterday morning when I went out to feed, one of my girls was off by herself gasping and wheezing with every breath. I checked her throat and saw no foreign bodies or parasites. She was exhausted, closing her eyes at times. Every once in a while she sneezed, or something, and she had the...
So many words of wisdom offered to you in the previous posts - all true! It's the worst when you can't protect the helpless.
Years ago, I lost a couple hens and my rooster to an unknown predator and the remaining hens were so traumatized and depressed they went into a molt and moped around...
