Oh god. That seems rather...painful. For the rooster, that is. Can't I just clip them, like with dog toe-nail clippers? Keep them really short? I guess I'm assuming that they, in fact, like a toe-nail. I've never actually touched one, so I don't know what they're made of. Maybe repeatedly...
I'm having this problem as well. I have an Ameracauna rooster; he'll be a year old April 6th. He's pretty feisty...fortunately he doesn't have spurs yet, just little nubs...so while he startles me, I'm not afraid of him at this point because I know he's can't hurt me. But if you aren't...
I am new to chickens; I just started my chicken collection last Spring with day old's from Ideal Poultry. I currently have 5 hens and a rooster. One of my hens is setting; she's a Salmon Faverolle. Oddly (or oddly to me, at least) she didn't decide to set in the partitioned off area where...
My EE's do the same thing...their eggs tend to be a bit longer than my Buff's or BR's. I have noticed that sometimes, towards the narrower end of the egg, the shell seems to get a little swirly, for lack of a better description. I think this is due to a calcium deficiency, so I give them...
Is dusting for lice and mites something that I should do regularly, as a preventative method...or just something that should be done when there is evidence that lice or mites are present? If I should be dusting routinely, what should I use and how often? I have 6 hens and a rooster; they have...
Your dog is a breed with a higher prey drive. Yes, you might be able to teach her not to attack the chickens...but at this point, it'd be a lot of work. Why not keep the dog and the chickens separate? You can't fault your dog (ie get rid of her) for doing what's instinctual to her. You're...
Farm Bureau does have breed specific legislation though...so if you have a Rottie, Dobie, GSD, ANY type of bull dog, etc...forget about it. I love how companies can discriminate against dog breeds as a whole, but can't discriminate against children or the elderly or any other "group".
Ohhhdear-
I have State Farm, and I'm in Kentucky. Easiest HO insurance company to get along with that I've found. We have two American Pit Bull Terriers...State Farm has no breed specific legislation, they didn't even ask if I *have* dogs. Last year, we installed a wood burning stove...
CRPERDUE-
Just an alternative idea for the plastic zip ties, in case you find they don't work very well: our coop is a metal frame also...it was a small greenhouse, but the 2008 windstorm absolved it of it's duties as such, so we converted it into our coop run. We used something similar to a...
Well...she didn't make it. She died sometime last night. I guess you have to expect these things...but dammit all, I was really hoping she'd pull through. Had to be one of the Faverolles, too...naturally, it couldn't have been one of the included-for-warmth extras.
Bah. My little chick is still not doing well. I've been checking her regularly for pastiness, but I don't think she's really even pooping. She drank some water and ate a little food this morning...I got some plain yogurt and mixed with her crumbles, and scrambled an egg for her. She's just...
I'm using Manna-Pro medicated chick starter crumbles. I do have a bag of landscaping sand that I got from Lowe's...should I put some in there? Just scatter it in with the pine shavings?
This morning her little bum was cakey again, so I washed it off as best I could with warm water...at least...
