No,I have no roosters here now. It seems like the hens bellies are a little thin on feathers compared to the winter months, but not bald like their lower backs.
If they are molting, how long does this last usually?
Thanks!
2 Noobie questions for you Cheese heads.
1. My hens are now 1 year and 1 week old. I've was getting about 90% eggs per day over the winter with a light on in their coop at night. The last week or so I've dropped to about 25%,like somebody flipped a switch! The light is still on overnight too...
Hey,this whole chicken raising thing was my wife and kids idea originally. Now I'm the "chicken whisperer" of the family. I take care of them, and have grown to love it. I'm still a rookie, but I learn as I go.
So what kind of dog are you getting?
I have a BIL in Richland Center and another in Yuba. They get their chicks From Chets,in Richland Center.
I got mine from Klema Feeds,in Fransville, but Chets would be a lot closer to you. I know there is a member or two from your area, maybe they know more places around you.
RooBeeC,what part of the state are you in? That way one of the people here local to you can chime in on where they got theirs.
A few here have had good luck from Sunnyside,as Jim said.
I got mine at a local feed store, and all 15 lived. My local Farm& Fleet (Staurtavant) sells chicks too,but I...
We did give medicated feed, but this was my wife's and I first chickens ever. So it was a learning experience. A guy I was talking to said we didn't need medicated with a fresh coop and new chicks. He told me the medicated feed was for bringing new chicks into an environment that has already had...
Yes,we ordered a few breeds of 1 day old chicks. Out of the 15 we ordered, all lived. I did end up with 2 roosters ,that we gave away eventually. All 13 hens are doing fine. Though we did give another 2 away to friends. We want to get another few this year to keep the flock "young".
I got mine last year from Klema Feed in Franksville. This year my wife and I are going to check this place out. A little more expensive, but figure we'd take a look.

Cindy,Yup,nothing but rain here too in Racine/Kenosha the last 24 hours.
I'll have to try coloring my brown eggs I guess. I told the wife to go out and buy a dozen white eggs for the kids. I guess we'll try both! Has anybody tried coloring the brown eggs with run of the mill store bought dyes?
Wifey tells me we're going out to a local farm to get a few new chicks today. Argghh,I think our 8'x 4' x 6' tall coop is maxed out with our 11 layers now???
Another thing is- I'm told that if you introduce new birds to an existing coop you should feed them the "medicated" chick food?
This comes...
All doing good, I hope.
Wind blew down another few sections of fence a few days ago. I'm gonna be busy this spring as that's at least 5 8' wide panels that blew down in the last month or so. I might just replace the whole 200' run,as the fence has been here longer than the 21 years I've owned...
I fell asleep Saturday night watching TV in bed. When I woke up a few hours later I found my glasses had fallen off and I was laying on them. They looked like they went through a blender. My eyeglasses Dr. office fixed em up with new parts Monday AM-no charge!
