    Traumatized hen- Mucous

That really creeps me out! But I live in a part of Massachusetts where you don't find too many snakes besides a garter snake here or there... do youhave any advice as to medicine I can give her? Or how to help with the gasping? I did just catch her eating little while ago. That is good right?

    Traumatized hen- Mucous

I think that you are right... Yesterday I went out to the coop and the hen was laying in a mangled heap on the floor. She was gasping for breath and had a badly broken wing. I separated her and put her in a clean laundry basket in my kitchen and figured she would be a gonner by the time I...

    Traumatized hen- Mucous

One of my hens had been laying on eggs for over a week. Today I came home and found that she was not in her box. The rooster had somehow been locked inside alone with her all day and she was hiding in a corner very traumatized. I'm sure the rooster must have roughed her up a bit. The weird...

    Fencing alternative

I have five chickens and two ducks that free range. We live on a couple of acres and the chickens are wonderful about staying in the yard. The ducks on the other hand like to wander at times. They'll wander down to the sidewalk, very close to the road. I'd hate to coop them up, but I'd also...

    My Ducks love cat food!

I'm a little late to the thread, but I think this is funny. Years ago I had one duck and a couple of cats. I think the duck thought she was a cat and eventually the only thing she would eat was Meow mix. She was beautiful and healthy and layed many eggs for years.

    Soft eggs etc

Okay... so I thought my chicken was going broody, but I think she just takes hours to lay an egg. She sits in the nesting box for half the day and then she'll hop out, there will be an egg and she goes on with life. I feel bad for her though. Do you think there's something wrong? Also, I...

    Broody already??

I think my chicken is going broody. She has spent the past two days in the nesting box and is making funny noises and getting defensive when I touch her. The weird thing is... she JUST laid her first egg a few days ago. She's only 25 weeks old. What's wrong with her? Should I get some...

does anybody else have a "watchchicken"?

There is a row of nesting boxes on each side of my chicken coop. The chickens like to sleep together on the left side of the coop where there is plenty of room, but every night one chicken always sleeps on the right side by itself. Its never the same chicken either. They rotate and take turns...

    solar?

This is the first year I've put a hundred year old poultry house to work in my backyard. I have six chickens. The barn doesn't have any working electricity and I want to prepare for winter with a heat lamp etc. Should I get a small solar panel? Any suggestions? I'd like them to lay all winter...

Let's Define the Term "Free Range"

I find that once chickens are big enough, the cats wont go near them... There are a lot of cats around here and I was worried about the same thing. At first they were very curious about the chickens, but I think a flock of chickens can hold their own and the cats don't want to bother.
