Really good to hear! ☺️ I’ll just keep close watch on their activity as it gets colder but won’t worry as much about them. They’re such sweet and friendly little birds with big personalities, I love them!
That’s the hard part since these are barnyard mix bantams from local co-op type feed store, I’m not sure on breed. All 3 have feathered feet, and 2 of the 3 are bearded so they aren’t ameraucana bantams but they seem to look similar to d’Uccle bantams 🧐. The cross-beak ameraucana I have living...
They’re adorable!! That’s at least a good reference point if your more sensitive one seems to be more comfortable and active over 10deg then if I see temp swinging below that overnight, it may be worth pulling the little ones to someplace a bit warmer.
I’m curious what other people do with bantams in the winter. I’ve read lots of things about standard chickens not needing heat and being very cold tolerant as long as the coop is draft free and dry, but I’ve also read about bantams not being as cold tolerant but unsure of how much cold is too...
🤔 it would be worth a try… they’re about 6 mo old/full size so they’re probably a few pounds. They’re leery about trying any new treats when I’ve tried to find something to bribe them (won’t touch millet, mealworms, scratch, etc), but they didn’t mind switching from crumble to pellet formulas in...
So I’ve been trying to find solutions for deworming or medicating guineas. They’ve suddenly and completely stopped laying eggs 1-2 weeks ago (which I’ve been hoping is just seasonal transition and not a real symptom, even though it’s still 80s during the day), their waddles and noses seem paler...
Yes, there’s a dozen chickens in total 😉 6 older pullets, 3 bantams, and 3 lavenders. We were not looking for roosters, just kept looking to find lavenders and those breeds sounded like generally more docile birds. We eventually only found them with local breeder after weeks of looking since we...
This is my first year raising chickens and ended up getting a variety of chicks staggered throughout the spring. I’m debating on how/if to start mixing them.
My oldest group is 6 full size pullets about 18wks old now with variety of breeds (australorp, Easter egger, sapphire gem, 2 RIR...
I think I have a Guinea with broken leg… any chance they can adapt to 1 leg or is it hopeless and needs put down? It feels like it’s probably the thigh bone, not lower leg, so not easy to wrap/splint
🤔 I’ll definitely look into it… I don’t want it to keep alerting me every time a chicken moves but I thought maybe I can mount it on the side facing the fence beside the coop (chicken coop/run is entirely within fenced backyard) so that it’s facing the side most likely to be exposed to wildlife...
Most definitely! Right now, the run just has the coated chicken wire that came with it, but we are only letting the older pullets out in it when they are directly supervised by one of us and/or one of farm dogs who are chicken-friendly but will take out a coon etc in a heartbeat. We did get some...
These bantams have me stumped. They act very pullet-like (squat down when petting them, very gentle/sweet/quiet, like 3 peas in a pod with no chest bumping or pecking at each other at all… but the base of their combs have been turning pink/red over past week or so even though comb hasn’t grown...
