    Chickens dying from cold

Original poster here. Mosture is still the issue. I know most of you are adamantly opposed to the use of heat lamps and yes in does raise the moisture but it is the only thing keeping them alive at night so I’m all for using it as an emergency measure. Ive been opening the coop when the sun is...

    Chickens dying from cold

Thanks everyone! The culprit is the moisture in the air. It was below zero with a humidity index of 80%. It is a very wet cold here in Iowa right now. I broke down and put heat lamps in there and have been making sure it doesn’t get steamy in there. It is -19 here right now, Getting ready to...

    Chickens dying from cold

Help! This is my first winter with chickens and I thought I was prepared! They are in a coop at night and I’ve made sure there is no major drafts. I make sure they have access to clean and unfrozen water, food, and plenty of straw. I’ve read you shouldn’t use heat lamps because it will interfere...

Would a raccoon take 5 eggs and leave no evidence?

Well I found the egg thief. It's my dog who has never raided the nest before decided to help himself. My missing hen was walking around waiting for food this morning. It was apparently a coincidence she decided to go broody the same time my dog ate the eggs!

Would a raccoon take 5 eggs and leave no evidence?

I just set the live trap and I found a pile of broken egg shells. I'm sure she's not in the coop. I'm definitely keeping them in the corn crib until we catch the culprit.

Would a raccoon take 5 eggs and leave no evidence?

I went to collect eggs this evening and they were gone. I know there was at least 5 because I checked earlier in the day. There is no sign of broken or eaten eggs, they're just gone. Could a raccoon do that? Also, one of my hens was not in the coop when I went to close them in for the night...

Chickens have black spots on combs and face area

I have 14 chickens and they started getting black spots on their combs and face area about a month ago. I noticed it with a couple and soon they all had it. At first I thought it might be dirt so I made sure they had access to a clean dust bath. The ones with the most spots have slightly droopy...

    What killed my pekin?

Have not caught anything on the trot line and no signs of mink or snapping turtles. There was a massive pile of raccoon poop in our driveway. I have a trap ordered. I've kept our dog close to them and there hasn't been any other attacks.

    What killed my pekin?

I have a trot line out and I'm getting a trap today

    What killed my pekin?

One last guess. Has anybody had a problem with mink and could it do that much damage? I still haven't been able to locate the area of the attack. Most of the big feathers are in the water. My other ducks seem to be terrified to go in the water. They've been hiding under a bench all day and will...

    What killed my pekin?

Weasels aren't common in this area but it is possible. We do have raccoons, possum, fox, and coyotes.

    What killed my pekin?

I know it's a big chunk! I'm still at a loss of what it could be. The other ducks seem to be afraid to get in the pond now. We have big snapping turtles around here but I don't think they go for the neck like that? I thought they try to drown them first.
