    Cross beak chick...suggestions?

My EE looked that at two weeks, and at 4.5 weeks is 50% worse. In retrospect, I would have culled her at 2 weeks. She's half the size of the others and every day I look at her and wonder if she's suffering. She spends all her time trying to eat. They all enjoy a deep bowl of moistened chick...

Found this coop freshener at TSC. Is it safe for chicks?

It looks very similar to Dookashi which I use in my brooder with a deep layer of pine shavings for my 4-week old chicks. They do try to eat it when I add it to their litter so I wouldn't use it for tiny chicks as they might ingest it in lieu of food.

What's the best type of brooder ?

I chose the MHP route because it was more similar to a broody hen, not a glaring 24 hr sun. I kept my 17 littles in a tote for a week because that is what I read about here. I quickly moved them into a 4'X8' plywood-based brooder in the garage because my coop isn't built yet and it's still cold...

Are baby chicks too dirty to hold?

You are going to have to closely interact with the chickens throughout their life so if you are not prepared to handle chicks then how do you anticipate handling full grown hens? Mine were inside for 1 week. I didn't notice a smell or intolerable dust but could not bear to see them in what we...

Chicks won’t go under heat plate?

I'm not an expert but they are a flock and I had to get a bunch of them under together before they figured out it was the place to be. Putting them in one by one didn't work. My litter is deep so they excavate to the level where they are comfortable. Mine is angled higher in front, probably a...

I live in Anchorage, AKA Northern Seattle... I've only been here 18 months from California so it's still all new.

    Eco glow 20 heater

I am using one, in addition to the Momma Heating Pad, which the chicks prefer. My solution for my almost 2-week old chicks is to use deep bedding that they rearrange. When they have excavated to near the bottom of the brooder, I raise it up. In retrospect, I would have gotten the one with 4 legs...

Hi! I'm new to chickens, realized after ordering chicks that I have never interacted with a chicken! I have 17 chicks hatched on 3/28 from Cackle - 5 EE, 5 Buff Orpingtons, 7 Silver-laced Wyandottes. I tend to coddle my animals, but I need these chickens to be Alaska tough! I've been lurking...
