So if I’m understanding this correctly- I have a NN hen with 1 gene and being that I’m breeding her to a non NN rooster I have a 50% chance of having NN chicks.
I have two naked neck/cochin hens- one is buff and one is black. I would like to breed them and have more naked necks. I do not have a naked neck rooster-only Welsummers and a barnyard mix rooster.
I recently hatched out 14 eggs from all different breeds and only got 1 naked neck. I wasn’t...
Update: the two weaker chicks did not make it through the night. The one that hatched from the wrong end did not make it the first night. The one who aspirated was a day older but did not make it through the night after aspirating. I still have 14 healthy chicks but it’s still sad.
Ok so I swear I can’t make this up- I moved the dry chick (the one that was born bloody) to the brooder. I tried showing them the food and I dipped their beak in water. I saw a single drop of water on their beak and they lifted their head and then began panting. A small amount of liquid did come...
Oh no! So I ended up making it harder for them 🤦♀️ I’m so glad they’re ok! Thank you I was not aware of that. I read some other people had done that and just did it. I should’ve done more research on it.
Last night I pulled it from the incubator and used tweezers to remove the tiniest bit of shell to allow for more breathing space. I could see a little blood and put it back in to finish absorption. When I got home from work I did have to help with the membrane. The shell was completely zipped...
The chick that hatched with blood is still hanging on! Just laying around in the incubator but I’m going to move it to a separate brooder now. I noticed their eyes have been closed but they were open yesterday so I’ll have to keep an eye on that.
As far as the egg that pipped on the wrong end...
I have an egg pipped at the wrong end. It’s a very small opening and I can see the beak poke out periodically. It’s been at least a couple of hours but I’m unsure how long. The incubator was opened today to remove hatched chicks. The last chick that hatched had a slightly more difficult time and...
Shes (or he idk) is still hanging in there. Another chick hatched and is seeking her out for snuggles but she keeps moving away. She keeps laying more to her side which is a concern. Now I have an egg that’s pipping on the wrong end. I see movement and the beak is right there. I’m not sure how...
I just had some hatch this morning and into the afternoon that pipped yesterday. From everything I’ve read it can take up to 24 hours or even longer to hatch. Its so hard to be patient but you just have to wait it out and let the chicks do their thing.
So it looks like it was just a blob of a bloody substance with a little yellow chunk attached to the end. It was on one of the legs but did come off on it’s own while she was moving around. The leg has a red irritated area right on the outside of the bend in the leg. It looks like a slightly...
Thank you! I took another chick out but left one that was snuggling with her. She seems to have dislodged the bloody mass and it’s no longer attached. She seems ok but time will tell I guess 🤞
It was definitely from her egg. I originally thought it was from another chick also. I posted another update right below yours before I saw your response. Would you mind looking at it and telling me what you think?
