Blood on hatching egg?

I have an egg hatching right now and I noticed a drop of blood on the outside. The membrane appears to have some blood on it as well. The chick is progressing and has almost completed the zip. Today is day 22 of incubation and I’ve had 11 healthy chicks so far. I only opened the incubator to remove 7 dry chicks and some egg shells briefly because it was very crowded. Is this normal? Did I do something by opening the incubator?

The blood is most likely from another chick. A chick probably got blood on it from it's umbilical area. Very unlikely that it is from the chick in the egg.

I open my incubator to take chicks out because I get nerbous about chicks playing soccer with the hatching eggs and it has not caused any problems because I barely crack the incubator enough to get my hand in there and get a chick out.

Ok it hatched right after I posted this. It doesn’t appear to have completely absorbed everything and has a bloody substance hanging off of it. I removed two of the rowdier chicks to prevent her from being stepped on. She has been moving around and chirping a lot. Any idea of she’ll be ok or if there is anything I can do for her?

The blood is most likely from another chick. A chick probably got blood on it from it's umbilical area. Very unlikely that it is from the chick in the egg.

I open my incubator to take chicks out because I get nerbous about chicks playing soccer with the hatching eggs and it has not caused any problems because I barely crack the incubator enough to get my hand in there and get a chick out.

It was definitely from her egg. I originally thought it was from another chick also. I posted another update right below yours before I saw your response. Would you mind looking at it and telling me what you think?

You did not cause that by opening the incubator. I personally do not open the incubator during hatch without a solid reason but that is a different post.

Two things could have happened. Before they zip the chick needs to dry up any blood vessels in the membrane that surrounds it. If not, it can hit a blood vessel when zipping.

You posted while I was typing so I'll change what I was saying. That chick was not ready to hatch but it did. That is a lot of blood. The only thing I know to do is to keep it warm (in the incubator works) and keep other chicks from pecking it. It probably will not recover but give it a chance.

Try to put something on that area to prevent any bleeding. Flour can work for that, it can clot blood.

Keep that chick away from any other chicks. It would be good to keep it in the incubator as long as you can to hopefully increase chances of that drying up and possibly falling off. Even if you have to seperate a small area for the chick where other chicks can't get to it.

I have never experienced any chicks this bad, but I have had a couple bleeding after hatching, so I stopped the bleeding best I could and kept them in the incubator and they all were back to normal pretty quick. But mine was not as bad, so there is no guarantee.

And if they make it to being able to walk around and dried off, it would be good to get some vitamins and electrolytes into them to keep them going and hopefully give her a health boost.

Thank you! I took another chick out but left one that was snuggling with her. She seems to have dislodged the bloody mass and it’s no longer attached. She seems ok but time will tell I guess

So it looks like it was just a blob of a bloody substance with a little yellow chunk attached to the end. It was on one of the legs but did come off on it’s own while she was moving around. The leg has a red irritated area right on the outside of the bend in the leg. It looks like a slightly open sore but it’s not bleeding and she’s definitely weaker on that leg. She keeps laying on her side and I thought she had passed when I just checked her. She’s still not fully dry and weaker so she’s alone in the incubator with the eggs that haven’t hatched.

I will definitely take your advice and keep her separate even if I have to set up a second small brooder for her. I put electrolytes in the water for the chicks in the brooder and will do the same for her.

I did forget to mention she was the first pip I noticed Saturday morning around 2am and had started to zip when I checked later in the morning. I thought she was going to be the first one to hatch but ended up being 11th. So she pipped Saturday at 2am and hatched out today around 1:30pm- so almost 36 hours. I was watching her slowly struggle all day and it took everything in me not to help. I know it probably would’ve been worse if I intervened. After reading a lot about assisting with hatches it sounded best to let the chicks do it on their own.

I am happy that there is no bleeding. I hope that she pulls through! I will keep an eye out for when you post the picture!

Shes (or he idk) is still hanging in there. Another chick hatched and is seeking her out for snuggles but she keeps moving away. She keeps laying more to her side which is a concern. Now I have an egg that’s pipping on the wrong end. I see movement and the beak is right there. I’m not sure how long it’s been like that because I’ve been distracted with this one. Any recommendations for pipping on the wrong end or should I start a new thread?
