I have an egg pipped at the wrong end. It’s a very small opening and I can see the beak poke out periodically. It’s been at least a couple of hours but I’m unsure how long. The incubator was opened today to remove hatched chicks. The last chick that hatched had a slightly more difficult time and I noticed the membrane was stuck just a little to their back but they were able to kick the shell and membrane off. 14 chicks have hatched and today is the end of day 22. I did not want to assist with hatching but this little one is making no progress and I’m getting concerned. Any advice?

When they pip at the wrong end they usually take longer to hatch as opposed to the right end. They can not internally pip when they pip at the pointed end so the chick is likely still absorbing the yolk, as they would be when they internally pip. If you can see chewing motions then it is still absorbing the yolk. Try to make sure the pip stays facing up and give it at least 24hrs, if the chick starts to zip but stops then I'd personally give it some help. If no progress is made but the chick is still lively after 24hrs I would probably slowly chip away at the shell and see what's going on.

I've only hatched eggs twice but in each batch I had a couple pip at the wrong end (shipped eggs). All but one was able to hatch w/o assistance.

Thank you! I will check in the morning to see how they’re progressing.
