Eagle Beak is doing great! It's been two weeks and the wounds under her wings are almost gone. Her chest is significantly better and seems to be healing nicely.
For the first week I rinsed daily with chlorhexidine wash and applied Neosporin. Every effort to cover/bandage the wound was...
I am so very sorry for your loss. What breed was Curly Jo? I don't really have any answers for you, but some types are more susceptible to reproductive problems.
Thank you so much for responding. I definitely have some old pantyhose and tights kicking around... Hopefully I can fashion something for her that will stay put and be comfortable.
Grrrrr... Predators! I have lost one other bird to a hawk and a couple to foxes over the years. It stinks. But I...
My two year old hen tangled with a hawk today and came away with a couple of gashes under her wing and a wound to the breast. I would love some advice on the chest... I can't quite figure out what to do. There's a blob of fat that is hanging down out of the wound. I removed some feathers...
I would suggest searching the BYC site for "white earlobe" and seeing what other people have experienced. It is really helpful to post a picture if you can!
One of my girls comb and wattles turned hazy and white-ish this winter. It looked like dry skin, so I put some olive oil on it. It looked...
Thanks to you and Wikipedia I learned a new vocabulary word today!
Caruncle
A caruncle is defined as 'a small, fleshy excrescence that is a normal part of an animal's anatomy'.[1] Within this definition, caruncles in birds include wattles (or dewlaps), snoods and earlobes.
My girl had a half-dollar sized patch of skin under her wing torn off by a fox 11 days ago. She is healing remarkably well... the wound is looking better each day. I have kept her in the house except for short, well supervised excursions outside recently. Well, tonight wasn't so well supervised...
Yeesh - That's tough. I would be inclined to leave her be, or wrap the wing as well as you can so that it stays still long enough to heal/fuse... whatever bones do. I personally don't have the guts to do an amputation myself, (or the $$ to pay a vet!) but that seems really traumatic and invasive...
I used these when my rooster was favoring (mounting... getting busy with... etc!) one particular hen to the point of baldness - http://www.hensaver.com/hen-saver-hen-apron-saddle.html
It worked well, and it was hysterically funny watching the poor hen get used to the saddle. Ever seen a...
Well, the good thing is that the bath won't do her any harm if she is not egg-bound... it sounds like your hen is kind of enjoying it! I had to hold my struggling girl down the whole time! Just keep her nice and warm when she gets out... I actually blow-dried mine. She liked that part!
I am...
I wish that I knew what it was and could tell you just what to do! I have been through similar situations and it is hard... especially with respiratory problems. Have you searched BYC for Coryza? This thread has some good info - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=99874&p=1...
I don't know much about homeopathy for people or animals, but I do have Bach's rescue remedy for pets in my "chicken emergency kit". It really seems to help calm them down.
30 minutes is what I have read and used. I had a hard time keeping my girl's vent under the water, but it totally did the trick the two times that I had to do it!
