Good morning! My son and I have issues with chicken math (I didn't know it was a real thing...). We've incubated eggs the past three springs; these are this year's chicks. Our rooster is a gorgeous GLW. The hens are Ameraucana, Barred Rock, GLW, and a Speckled Sussex. I think we have two...
Thanks for your reply! I found the thread you attached helpful- especially what the "red shoulders" of a cockerel look like. Our fingers are crossed! (One of the reasons for my doubts was how much more pink/red their combs and wattles are compared to the other breeds we got. They have not gotten...
Good evening! We've expanded our flock, adding a variety of birds to our ISA Browns. We already had a GLW roo and wanted to get a couple of hens. I believe we have one pullet and one cockerel; my son is convinced they're both girls; my husband thinks they're both boys. I guess whatever happens...
I don't have current photos, but one pullet looks like a buff orpington with white lacing, the other pullet looks like the ISA with white lacing, and the cockerel looks like the GLW roo but without the black lacing. All have rose combs. Great looking, stocky birds, and the girls are fantastic...
We're new to incubating eggs from our chickens.... I decided on the NR 360 because of its ease of use. I'm glad I did! We've had two hatches that were easy-peasy and are enjoying curious little chicks. It was about $140 at the local farm supply store.
The only thing that was not ideal was that...
We hatched some of our backyard chickens' eggs this spring. Two of our hatches were 3 and a half weeks apart. I decided to divide the brooder into 2 sections and integrate the smaller chicks when they were about a week old. The bigger chicks had different plans and ended up making their way over...
Hi, there... I'm new to hatching chicks but had a similar experience with our last hatch. I watched the chick for a while. Eventually, the cord dried up a bit and the shell fell off. I left the chick in the incubator for 24 hours to dry. After I moved it to the brooder, the cord continued drying...
Thanks! Yours, too!
I'm okay with chicken stew, but my 8-year-old is a sensitive soul. These are the first chicks we've hatched ourselves and he LOVES them. We've had talks from day one, but... I'm sure he'd be happy to hatch more eggs, but with my luck, we'd get cockerels again!
I noticed the red coming in more slowly on the second chick... I'm not necessarily convinced it's a pullet, but I am hopeful!
My son is convinced we'll be able to keep all the cockerels with only two hens, and I'm not into chicken math just yet!
We hatched a couple of our eggs (gold laced wyandotte rooster over ISA brown hen) 5 weeks ago. I believe we have one cockerel and one pullet based on comb/wattle development and color. They both inherited their dad's rose comb, and I've read that comb type can be slow-developing, but the first...
I'm not sure what to do from here, I'm sorry. Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to add their thoughts.
How many days has it been now? Did you have others hatch and you're waiting on a final egg?
It can take up to 24 hours to make an external pip after the chick has pipped internally. After the external pip, it can take up to another 24 hours to unzip. I haven't had to assist, so I can't make suggestions as to that.
