hey all. I’m looking to raise some meat birds. I have a huge variety of breeds - I love the wide range of colors and sizes. I was thinking about starting with several Cochin hens I have that are huge. Just not sure I’d like their meat. (I’ve heard they are really dark.)
I raised some Cornish...
hi all! Curious what I will get with a Wheaton marans rooster over Splash marans hen. I also have golden cuckoo marans and FBCM marans hens. Will introduce FBCM rooster and hens in about a month. I know the BBS chart but not sure where Wheaton or cuckoo fit into it. Thanks in advance!
Hey cornfed! I'd be inter eyes in your results. Just butchered a lavender Orpington roo today (hatched in Nov). Put him directly in the oven. Meat was chewy. Looks like I should have soaked him in brine and let him rest in the fridge a day or two. Curious to hear your results.
Thanks for sharing your issue. I'm on my third hatch. No problems. I bought the sensor mentioned previously and I love it. The alarm is priceless. I let my jar of water get too low but was able to remedy very fast.
I did notice that if the jar of water gets too low, it stops pumping. And I...
Hi all. Can someone confirm that this is a golden cuckoo marans? I have 2 like this: barred with red coming in on tips of feathers and around neck. (The other isn't as predominate in the feather, but definitely brown in the neck. Both have feathered legs.
Any other words of advice?
Update on brinsea: my hatch rate sucked but I feel that had to partially do with the eggs I set (shipped Olandsk & hedemora). Of 9, 3 hatched. My first time with hedemora but second with Olandsk. Last time I only got 1. Both are very temperamental on humidity. Thought Brinsea would ensure good...
So far so good. Lockdown was today. Hatch day is Saturday 2/4. I set 4 Hedemora and 5 Olandsk. (I have more in a little giant 9300; these breeds require a lower humidity so that's why only these are in the Ovation.)
The lid is heavy so getting eggs out individually isn't fun. I take out a tray...
True, however, I find some breeds do better under different humidity so it allows me to separate them but hatch at the same time.
I'm keeping my Styrofoam bators and plan to use them for temporary brooders or when I get a chick that isn't as healthy as its peers. :)
I actually had some set so I transferred them to the Ovation. I love it!! The auto humidity is great. Using this thing requires little attention. I don't babysit it nearly as much as I do my styrofoam bators.
The lid is heavy so I just slid a tray out when I candle. Makes me nervous because I...
