We raise our Delaware chickens for their large - extra large eggs - great foragers - love to hear the roo's crow, nice big meat birds (extra roo's end up in the fridge that don't make the grade) Love how they look - they clean up the barn yards, eat tons of weeds and seeds, are very prolific egg...
Very interesting - ours are Delaware and should be heading into the large-extra large arena - some are really small, but I notice the size tends to gradually increase with some of the eggs (after 2 weeks). Don't have time to weigh them this week - but just wondering what other folks are observing.
She's a Delaware, when I pick her up her legs go somewhat limp, and she closes her eyes. I do have some electrolytes and yogurt, can give her some of that. Her comb is light pink, not bright red, so I am suspecting that she is not quite yet mature to be laying - an asumption, of course.
I've got this pullet I just found in our coop - she's 5 months old, we've never had any sickness before - she's sitting down, not moving much. None of my pullets have started laying eggs yet and I checked to see if she might be egg-bound (her comb is still light pink)
but I don't feel anything...
You might consider Blue Andalusians - they were developed in Spain (a hot climate) and do better in warm climates than cold (their combs can freeze). They are really stunning and a medium size chicken, pretty good egg layers from what I understand, laying white eggs.
Thanks for the link of the toxic plants - sounds like they might be good to avoid overall, and I'll scout around in some wetter areas for other healthy weeds!
Wondering if it is ok to feed a few thistle greens to our chickens, it is pretty dry around here and the thistles are some of the few greens around. Our chickens have a very large run, and aren't free range due to a nesting pair of Redtailed Hawks close by.
I've got a bunch of young Delies, 18 weeks old, some of the roosters are pulling random feathers off the hens (neck, tail, anywhere they can grab)and eating them. They are getting 16% organic layer, and I've been feeding them split peas and sunflower seeds for extra protein, plus fresh weeds and...
We have a 3 1/2 month old Blue Adalusian boy for sale - he is quite beautiful and we need to find a home for him. We are focusing on raising Delaware Chickens. He has been fed organic chicken starter and organic chicken feed from the beginning, and vaccinated against Marek's. We are asking $10...
