soft eggs from 10month old hen (or hens?)

I feed them a mix of crumble and pellet layer. I do add powdered eggs shells to it. I always have a lot of that on hand. Should I have oyster shell on the side as well?

soft eggs from 10month old hen (or hens?)

Hi, My girls will be a year old in May and have been laying pretty well since January. Their shells have been nice and thick since the beginning. Now, I'm starting to see thinner shelled eggs and this morning 2 were soft and malleable. I know this happens when hens first start laying, but I'm...

    New chickens that stop playing

Hi I got my girls last May,(16 of them) and by January I was getting about 10 eggs a day. Now it seems that 2 of my Easter eggers have stopped laying completely for the past 3 weeks. Is this normal for chicks that just started laying to stop so suddenly?

messy backside and how to clean it up in winter

Unfortunately, I can't. We are remodeling the house across the street where the girls' coop is. At the moment it has no heat or water. this is making things a bit more difficult.

messy backside and how to clean it up in winter

Hi, I have 16 assorted hens, all about 10 months old. One of my Brahmas has a really messy backside. If it was warmer out, I would put her backside in some nice warm water to clean her, but I'm not sure what to do with her in the cold weather. The rest of the girl look good..their butts are...

    favorite nesting box

Hey all.... I have 16 chickens that have finally started laying nicely. I have 8 assorted nesting boxes for them. I left an open bag of pine shavings in the coop and they all love laying their eggs in there. The problem is they they wait to use it and sometimes I have seen 3 of them trying to...

    laying eggs on roosting station

Thanks. Good advice. I'll measure the ones under the platform to make sure of the size as well as the ones in the corner. The three in the corner were used very successfully with my other chickens several years ago, so I just assumed they would work here. I'll check into that for sure. Thank...

    laying eggs on roosting station

There are 5 boxes under the roosting platform and 3 more in the corner of the coop. I have 2 big trays under the 2 roosting bars for easy cleaning.

    laying eggs on roosting station

My girls are 24 weeks old. I have 4 easter eggers, 3 speckled sussex, 3 light brahamas, 3 buff orpingtons and 3 salmon favorelles. The easter eggers finally started laying, but the others, with the exception of one, have not yet. One of them keeps laying on the roosting station instead of the...

    outside brooding

Hi, I will be getting my chicks in mid May. Typically I get them in March and keep the brooder inside. Can I keep the chicks outside in the coop, sectioned off in smaller segments with a heat lamp, since it is so late in the season? I live in upstate NY, so it's just starting to get warmer out...

    sand

Hi, I'm in the process of converting our shed into a palatial chicken coop. Hopefully, our girls will love it. My question is this: What kind of sand do I put down in the run and what the heck is "food grade DH"??? Sorry for the ignorance but hopefully i'll be learning much more in the near...

    baby chicks

Hi all, Just starting out and I was wondering if anyone could answer this question: Is there any reason not to get babies that are already 21/2 weeks old as opposed to getting 2 day old chicks?? I do live in Central NY and there is still a bunch of snow on the ground, although melting quickly. I...
