Hey, thanks. Harley is a hen, about 9 months old and she's been laying. I think the food is ok. They have a steady diet of purina layeena and i supplement with veggies, fruit, ricotta, leftovers, and the like. Harley continues to peck at Chleo. I often find Harley sitting on top of Chleo in the...
I need some experienced advice. I have 2 brown hens, one with a crossed beak, Chleo, and one not, Harley. Harley has always "picked on " Chleo is bit, but now, each morning when we let them out into their run, I find Chleo distressed, and often bloody around her beak or feet. This morning her...
Thanks for the info! I will definitely cover the boxes... This is their first summer and we haven't had heat like this in a long time. So not having access to their boxes won't stress them out or encourage egg binding???
The entire coop is metal woven fencing ... Not sure what's it called, but maybe will get a fan. About the boxes, don't they need the boxes to lay? I've also read that too much heat make cause egg binding. The boxes are build into one side of the house. I guess i could block them off.
I live on the coast in sc and it has been hot, the upper 90's snd low 100's.my girls have access to the yard and their house. On Monday, I found 4 of my hens piled on each other in their egg box dead. We were worried about the four hens I have at school and so I brought them to my home coop...
Hi. I am a teacher at a small Montessori school in sc. We have had chickens at our school for about 5 years or so...i finally talked my other half into letting me keep a few girls at home...the whole family fell in love with them. We have 5 aurucanas and we each named one. My children cuddle...
I am bummed that we had to bring Bello to school instead ofkeeping him at our house...i love their calls, too! This web site is awesome! I love talking to other "chicken whisperers". (That is what a friend of mine calls me!) Have a good night.
I appreciate all the input...hey Darkmatter...i saw your byc page your place is beautiful! We have just a small run and coop for our 5 girls...until we hit the lottery, then they ll be living the high life! Lol
What is better for a perch? Bamboo or 2x2 or dowel rods? My girls are young and we are just getting their coop ready...what is best for their feet?
Thanks for any info...you guys have been great on this forum!!
We ordered 15 easter eggers in June...5 are now living with a friend at her farm, 5 are living at my school where I teach, and for the first time ever, 5 came home with me! The chicks were suposed to all girls...the other morning...my son's "girl" sang a lovely rendition of...
So...do i need to worry about "quick' or something like that??? I did try to file her top and bottom beak and she stayed pretty well. We handle the girls a lot and Cleo especially is good with me. but it took a long time. I think a quick clip would be easier...I'll try it. you guys are...
Love the quote!! Thanks so much for the comments. I am ok with restraining her...i just needed someone to tell me that it is ok to hold her and file her beak! She seems about the same size as my others so i know she's getting food. I worry about her tongue getting too dry because her beak is...
Hi All,
My little Araucana, Cleo, has a crooked beak. I have 5 girls altogether and they're about 4 weeks old. I do feed Cleo with a deep dish and she seems to get water. I've read about trimming or filing beaks beaks. I need to do something because her top beak is starting to "hook" over...
