Thanks for all the feedback. They've had those big, red combs and wattles for several weeks (way before a POL hen), so I think it is safe to say they are BOTH roos. Here's the bad part: They were BOTH supposed to be pullets when I got them from the feed store. Go figure!
We had one at school who got pasty butt (named him Boudreaux after the butt paste . . .LOL), and it was even worse than yours. After cleaning off the fecal matter, we wiped his bottom with olive oil. That seemed to help prevent future cases. I'm sure it was also soothing to him after soaking...

Thanks so much for your quick response! I am glad to hear that cocci is always in dirt, so my chicks are getting exposed and are hopefully building immunity.
Hot, humid, and wet pretty much describes our climate in south Mississippi from April - October, so I think medicated feed is...
I am a newbie to chicken keeping, and I have a few questions about coccidiosis and would appreciate any feedback y'all can provide.
My chicks are currently 8 weeks old and have been on Purina Medicated Star & Grow since they hatched. They have never been vaccinated.
I understand that...
Sorry, Paco. Mississippi girl here, and we don't even have a musical named after our state :-( (Oh, what a beautiful mornin'! O, what a beautiful day!)
I think the 8-week-old chicken below is some type of red. Not sure if RIR or production red or NH. (We hatched it from an assortment of eggs at school, so breed is uncertain. The eggs came from Ideal Poultry, though.)
Pullet or Roo?
Here's a closer head shot:
Thanks in advance for...
I think the 8-week old black australorp is a roo, so I'll need to find a new home for him. Opinions?
(Left one is a pullet, right is suspected roo)
Here's a closer picture of the suspected roo.
Thanks in advance for opinions :-)
Well, congratulations! I can tell you are really excited, and I am soooooo happy for you! Can't wait to see pics :-) It sounds a lot like our coop (pic below).
My chicks aren't old enough to lay eggs yet, but here's my nesting set-up. (It was an old antique nest box that my mom gave me. She'd been using it as decoration, but I'm using it as a nesting box condo.)
