    These ARE roos, right?

Thanks for all the feedback. They've had those big, red combs and wattles for several weeks (way before a POL hen), so I think it is safe to say they are BOTH roos. Here's the bad part: They were BOTH supposed to be pullets when I got them from the feed store. Go figure!

These 3-months old RIRs are roos, right? I'm giving them away, and I don;t want to give away pullets.

What's wrong with my chicks? Nasty pic...

We had one at school who got pasty butt (named him Boudreaux after the butt paste . . .LOL), and it was even worse than yours. After cleaning off the fecal matter, we wiped his bottom with olive oil. That seemed to help prevent future cases. I'm sure it was also soothing to him after soaking...

    Medicated Feed/Coccidiosis Question

Quote: Thanks so much for your quick response! I am glad to hear that cocci is always in dirt, so my chicks are getting exposed and are hopefully building immunity. Hot, humid, and wet pretty much describes our climate in south Mississippi from April - October, so I think medicated feed is...

    Medicated Feed/Coccidiosis Question

I am a newbie to chicken keeping, and I have a few questions about coccidiosis and would appreciate any feedback y'all can provide. My chicks are currently 8 weeks old and have been on Purina Medicated Star & Grow since they hatched. They have never been vaccinated. I understand that...

    Red Pullet or Roo?

I think the 8-week-old chicken below is some type of red. Not sure if RIR or production red or NH. (We hatched it from an assortment of eggs at school, so breed is uncertain. The eggs came from Ideal Poultry, though.) Pullet or Roo? Here's a closer head shot: Thanks in advance for...

    Black Australorp Roo???

I think the 8-week old black australorp is a roo, so I'll need to find a new home for him. Opinions? (Left one is a pullet, right is suspected roo) Here's a closer picture of the suspected roo. Thanks in advance for opinions :-)

LETS sEE Your Nesting Boxes + discussion

My chicks aren't old enough to lay eggs yet, but here's my nesting set-up. (It was an old antique nest box that my mom gave me. She'd been using it as decoration, but I'm using it as a nesting box condo.)

Coop and Run for my Backyard Chickens (Pics!)

Quote: Thanks! The condo/nest box was my mom's. She's into antiques and had it nailed to the side of her shed just for decoration. When I told her we got chickens, she offered us the nest box condo, and we snapped it up. Even though our chicks are too young to start laying, they like to...

Ways you make your chicken coop creative and unique

Tasymo, your set-up is like chicken nirvana! When chickens are good and lay lots of eggs in this life, they get to come back as YOUR chickens in their next life to live in that chick cottage . . .LOL :-) That is the most charming coop I have ever seen. Love it! ADORABLE!

Coop and Run for my Backyard Chickens (Pics!)

We are REALLY new to keeping backyard chickens, and my husband and I have just finished the coop and run for our chickies. They seem to like it :-) The coop is a 5 1/2 X 5 1/2 predator-proof lean-to made of wood and hardware cloth, and the run is a 9 X 5 1/2 area enclosed with chicken wire...
