Hi, we have a 4 year old hen that has a swollen abdomen and walks funny. Her abdomen is firm and not squishy. She is eager to eat and comes to the fence when we come near the coop to see if we have food. She has not laid eggs since last Fall, but she has stopped laying every winter and at other...
Our older hen is no longer laying. She is 3 years 9 months. She seemed sick for about a month, barely eating and we were sure she was not going to make. Then she molted all her feathers. Now she seems healthy again, eating fine, but is still not laying. The rest of her looks back to her normal...
It is actually much cooler here now than it was the previous two weeks. She is pooping mainly water. She will take a few pecks of special treats like Tomato horn worms, but is definitely not eating or acting like normal.
She has stopped laying also. No sign of molting yet.
We were told our hen was a Dorking, but now I am questioning it based on some descriptions I was reading. Any ideas on her breed?
The one on the right I am wondering.
Hi, our 2 1/2 year old hen is not eating and sleeping a lot. I am wondering if they will do this when a pullet they share quarters with is about to start laying. The younger one seems to be challenging her elder for top bird!
Yesterday I was worried one of our pullets is really a cockerel and now today our two pullets just died! One late this morning and one just in the last hour. We can't see any sign of trauma or anything unusual. I was outside an hour ago and she seemed fine. Is there anything we should look for...
Yeah, because we are quite fond of her and don't want to have to give her away. Her voice is very goose like. Is this common? I could not find anything anywhere that talks about their voices. Hers is much deeper then our other pullets at the same age.
Thank you for the reply. I could not get your link to work, but I think I still found the site. I do not see the 4 month old cockerel, but I see a pullet. I may be looking in a different spot.
I redid my math and "she" is actually only 3 months and 1 week old. Do you still think it is a she?
We are still pretty new to raising chickens. We bought our first 4 babies in April and 3 of them ended up being cockerels (we only want hens). We then had one lonely chicken and 3 new babies. Now those new babies are almost 4 months old. Our oldest hen is almost 6 months old and is a Dorking...
So thanks to this group we realized we had three cockerels and got rid of them. Now we have one lonely girl. Anything we can do to prevent her from getting depressed?
We bought 3 new babies today to start this process all over, hopefully with better luck this time. It will be awhile before...
Thank you for the help. We are brand new to this. We had thought we bought four young pullets, but are now starting to think we got three cockerels and one pullet.
I just took some new photos. Hopefully this will help identify what we have. They are beautiful birds, but not quite...
A couple of days ago our largest chicken started crowing like a rooster in the morning. It sounds really loud and is a "hee-hee-hee" sound. We removed her to the garage overnight hoping it would help. This morning the next largest chicken started making the same sound. What is going on?
