I'm having the same problem right now. They have gone as far as kicking one hen out of the coop at night. The poor dear was sleeping out side in the cold. Not sure what to do. If I remove her will they just start picking on another or do I remove the biggest bully? This is the first time...
Shavings. Straw compacts holds moisture and smells funny. Shavings can be fluffed with a hoe which adds insulation value to the floor. They smell clean. Plus they stay dry which keeps the girls healthy. Shavings are the way to go.
I just went through the same problem a few weeks ago.
I covered the nest boxes with cardboard at night for one week. They got out of the habit and now nest on the roost rather than in the nest boxes. No more poo in the nest boxes. It worked for me.
I use a crushed rock they call fill lime. It is $7.50 a ton compared to the $25 a ton they wanted for sand. (NE Kansas price) It packs, sheds water and rakes well. The girls can dig in it and use it for grit. Never muddy!! Great stuff. Not too soft or too hard. Doesn't cling to my shoes...
Use a Thermo Cube. On at 35 degrees and off at 45. They are about $11. I've used one for 2 winters and had never had frozen water. Google it or look at your local farm store.
I have 1/2 hardware cloth burried a foot down and two feet out. My run has a tin roof. Pop door is open 24/7. Going on 3 years with no problems. Two pit bulls run free in our neighborhood and coons are frequently in the trash. The threat is there but the chickens are safe. May cost a...
I like fill lime. It drains well, compacts well but not so tight that they can't dig in it. It's cheap... $7.50 a ton compared to $25 a ton for sand. Get it from a quarry. It is the small left over stuff after they crush rock so they want to get rid of it cheap.
I attached a 2x6 to the inside wall so there is a wall width gap between the door and coop floor. This wasn't high enough so I added a 2x4 above it. They still kick stuff against the door bout not as much.
Thank You so much for the information. I knew I would get the answer to my question about how long and how to store eggs prior to incubation. Yuo guys are great!!!
