If you are going to have one of these I suggest the lower setting one. If your birds are used to 45 deg from the heater. Then suddenly you have no power and they are plunged into 10 deg temps it can be a shock to there system. I used the lower setting one for the first part of the winter, with the mild winter we have had i unplugged the heat all together. A 40w bulb is all they have had and they are quite healthily.

I have two of them in my coop. Love em!! One on the water heater and another on a ceramic bulb.. I don't worry about frozen water or chickens.
