Nesting Box Opinions, Thoughts, Input Please

I did not detail the actual build, there are photos that show reasonable detail.

I mounted it under a drop board and against a wall, so no back and no top needed. The are two end/side pieces, the 24" by 7' bottom + two 1" by 24" rails for it to rest on, two 5" by 7' pieces hinged together to form the cover for the "hidden" roll out section, then the front with attached outside perches.

If you have an interest I could take close up pictures of each part to better show how it assembles.
Thank you.

Your photos are good!
I can build, I have nesting boxes that I've made and am satisfied with them. I am looking into something I can move fairly easy, that is easy to clean (take out and actually wash/hose down as needed) and takes up a relatively small footprint.

But, I may have to build, just looking at what's on the market that may work:)

I used artificial grass on top of the bottom, a piece cut to about 30" by 7'. The extra width allows it to curl up the front to cushion eggs rolling down. My front hinged cover lifts off allowing the grass to be removed easily for waste disposal and washing when necessary. I have yet to wash it as most waste drops or brushes off.

Thank you.

If cleaning is the issue you could do what I do and provide plastic dish bowls. I had a no-shell layer for several years and the nests were getting all eggy. Now I just grab the bowl and wash it.

I'm leaning towards something similar. I usually don't have many issues but a broken egg or soft shelled egg can make a mess and is very hard to clean off wood.

I would like to hear from those that have nesting boxes like or similar to the one pictured below.
Do your hens use them, have you had any issues with the "product", would you buy/use the same nesting boxes again or choose something else?
If you choose something else, what would it be? A photo or link would be great.

Do you use one with legs or wall mount?
Photos if you have them?

Of course everyone is welcome with thoughts, opinions, etc.

I recent got an egg eater too. I am looking at a roll away meanwhile I am trying to make my own. I did look at this nest box but worried about how hot and cold the metal would get. I ordered Rent-A-Coop roll away nesting box and will put it to the test Monday morning. Keep us updated on what you get and how they work for you.

Let me know how yours works.

I don't have an egg eating problem, was just looking for something easy to move and clean.

I have always just used cardboard boxes. When they get dirty or collapse I replace.
But now I want something they can't sit on top of. I have 16 Brahmas so need sizable boxes. Cat litter tubs on their sides, maybe? Don't want to buy anything.. Any ideas?

I've seen some use buckets. Cat litter tubs might be good, especially if you are getting those anyway. Worth a try to see if your girls will like them.

If they are full size Brahma, a tote w/ a lid & a hole cut out. I found buckets too small for larger hens. I used 5 gallon buckets w/ The Fowl Stuff perch on the fronts. I also tried cat litter boxes (the squarish ones w/ the 3/4 lid) too small.

I don't have pics of those.

For our Beilefelder hens, I used a larger plastic container (potato storage?). The front was shorter than the back. I cropped pics, so again don't have a pic. I strapped the back to the pallet wall & set it on top of the 5 gallon feeder. I didn't put a roof on it, which it needed...

My breeder coop was not fancy, but did work.

Use cardboard at a slant above to keep them off the tote.

That said, I'm doing different things for nest boxes myself... "Chixperiments"!! 😂

Thank you for posting this again. I need to go read it & see if it's something I could put into my hoop coops.

For my tractors that I use as breeding pens, trying different things. Want light & washable... 🙂
