Thanks. I'll try the hay idea. I'm also toying with the idea of putting some kind of loose covering (cloth) over the box openings to make them more "private".
I also have some birds sleeping in the boxes at night, but that's another thread! :rolleyes:
I've had problems with egg eaters, so I re-built my nest boxes to be roll outs. I generally followed some of the designs here on the forum. I used green astro turf type carpet to line the floors.
Half my chickens have taken to it, but now I've got chickens laying in corners of the coop floor...
Can anybody ID this breed of chicken? We are her 2nd owners and know she is at least 10 years old. She is a sweet old girl (actually her name), and still gives us a white slightly pointy egg now and then! Would love to get a few more of her kind. Thanks.
Ok. Awesome! It seems a lot of people like this breed.
They are a little feisty. When I put them in with my buff Orpingtons of the same age they really picked on the Orpingtons for the first day.
All is calm now.
My wife bought me 6 chicks for my birthday from Tractor Supply and was told they were silkies. As the chicks got older they started growing feathers on their feet, but didn't have that fluffy look. I did some research and found silkies have 5 toes and black feet and beaks. These don't.

I had to rush out and buy a coop for them, no time to build.
They survived the first 6 months and gave us delicious eggs and hours of delight watching them forage around the yard and...
