I have a 6 month old Barred Rock hen who I noticed was walking around as though drunk. I brought her in and checked for injuries but can't see or feel anything. She is otherwise acting normal, eating and pooping, etc. It's just as though her left leg doesn't work very well. When I pick her up...
The mom of the blond one is a buff orpington, the dad is a ginormous colorful rooster (not sure of the breed but he's the beast amongst his hens in one of the pictures). The mom of the brown one is an ameraucana.
Roo or Hen?
The daddy roo is in the middle there.
This is going to sound odd, but someone told me that when my rooster attacks me (which he did frequently) that I should pick him up and cradle him like a football. Carry him around for 10-15 minutes and then put him back. Each time he attacks you, do it again. Amazingly this has toned down my...
I have one very large rooster and 5 hens of various sizes. I read that you should have at least 10 hens per rooster and now I see why. Their feathers are starting to disappear off their backs from over mating (I assume). Other than that they all act normal. Do I need to separate him and if so...
I have a silkie who has been laying on eggs for a few days. I moved them into a different nesting box because the other hens were crowding her. She didn't take the move to well and went back to her original spot, sans eggs. So the eggs were sitting in the other nesting spot all night and part of...
So I felt an egg.. way down in her abdomen and I tried to help it move up. When it got close she really strained and strained and wheezed and I never could feel the shell. She was just pushing a bloody mass out (like a big hemmoroid).. She is in chicken heaven now, I just couldn't watch her...
When I felt inside I didn't feel anything hard like an egg. It seemed like there was a bloody mass of some sort but I wasn't sure if that was just the inner vent being swollen and aggravated.
Update: Many warm baths later, some topical antibiotic cream.. there isn't much changed. The vent is less red but that's about it. THere seems to poop caked on the underlip of the vent but I can't get it to come off.. She seems more lively and isn't ok with just sitting in a bath anymore...
She just finished molting and was beginning to lay again.. although it's hard to say because I have two americaunas and it's hard to say which one lays and which one doesn't. Her "underneath the vent" area is quite swollen and hard.
Does she appear to strain at any time? She may hold her breath while doing this, then pant afterwards. Also, does she pant every now and then?
Is she showing appetite? Trying to get around after the others?
It's possible she may be an internal layer, and also possible that she's got a...
I have an Americauna hen that is just about a year old. I came out today and saw her walking like a penguin, dragging her butt on the ground. I picked her up and below her vent is swollen. I followed some advice on the forums and gave her a warm bath, felt inside the vent for an egg, but...
