Woke up today with 5 new chicks. Looks like the last chick is just being a bit late but almost out of the shell. 100% hatch rate! Not bad for my first hatching on the first run of a $35 homemade incubator. Better get the brooder up and running!
Thanks again for your help!
Thanks!
Temp seems OK. Tested the setup with multiple thermometers so I am reasonably certain that the temp is holding steady between 99.5 and 100.
I'm just going to sit back and keep my fingers crossed. Hopefully everything will turn out fine. I know at least two of the other eggs have...
So I have six eggs going in my incubator. Last night one of the eggs moved and the chick poked a very small hole in the shell. I started lockdown on day 14 and the night of the 15th (morning of the 16th) day it happened. I think its still moving inside but it has been 12 hours and the small...
I recently went through a few different watering systems. Nipples work OK but the quail splash a lot of water around. The final one I settled on was the poultry water cups attached to a PVC pipe and fed by a 5 gallon bucket. By far the best. Not only is it low maintenance but very little (if...
I've only ever done 24% and 28% myself based on the info on this site (and others). http://www.thepoultrysite.com/articles/473/feeding-quail/
I would think that 21% would be enough but I don't have enough experience to say.
Have you seen any issues with egg production or anything?
I prefer Boone's Feed or Blacksmith's Corner, but those are a bit south.
I would probably suggest visiting the closest feedstore to you so reupping can be as convenient as possible. If you don't like that feedstore then go the next closest.
Pretty much any actual feedstore will carry...
If by "La" you mean Los Angeles, I know of several places that carry high protein gamebird feed and Turkey Starter both organic and non-organic.
If by "La" you mean Louisiana, I got nothing.
Let me know if you need some recommendations in Los Angeles.
Edit... I meant 1/2"x1/2" hardware cloth. 1/4" is too small to let droppings through but any larger than 1/2" is enough to allow things to snag tiny feet and other quail appendages.
Heyo! Coming at you from Los Angeles.
Cages/pens are pretty easy depending on what specifics you want. My setup basically uses 1/4" hardware cloth bent into a 2'x2'x12" cube and held together with hogrings (J clips work better but I had hogrings on hand). I also built a pretty basic frame...
You can also check out this link on how to sex quail if the chest colors aren't the best option. Some coturnix breeds like Texas A&M are hard to sex based on feathers alone. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/150049/how-to-vent-sex-coturnix
Thanks! Yeah, I think I need to build a little addition to the coop in order to split up the trouble makers. Any excuse to bust out the tools.
It looks like the Jumbo female is getting on the little ********'s case whenever he picks on the A&M's.
Hello all,
I recently started with some coturnix a few months ago. I originally wanted to get chickens in order to teach my 2 yo daughter where food comes from. We already grow some veggies and fruits in our yard so I thought some eggs would aid in that. After some research I decided that...
Hello all,
I am a newbie to the quail deal. Originally got a male and 3 female standard coturnix a few months ago so my 2 year old daughter could have some pets and an appreciation for where food comes from. Well, I think I found my new hobby. Love these little dudes. Currently testing a...
