how old before I can determine hens/roosters?

I got two chicks from my daughter - her first grade class hatched and my grandsons wanted me to raise and add them to my flock of seven. My first fall/winter/spring has gone so well with my girls. Definitely cannot keep any roosters, and not sure about integrating with flock unless they are both...

Protecting your garden from your chickens? Electric Fence?

I have been wondering about this - my first spring with free ranging chickens - hardly ready to plant as we got a snow/ice storm overnight here in northern Michigan! My girls found my garlic starts I put in last fall, and have had the run of spacious fenced back yard. I'm thinking rather than...

    winter treats

Fabulous - I actually have some cracked corn cooking on the stove right now - yes, your suggestion to make sure it is cool is good - I think I will put the pot in the snow to cool down, give the girls some this morning and evening too - happy soltice!

Just added a thicker roost per someone's suggestions here - seems like when I was researching specs on building my coop, I never came across a recommendation for width of the roost...

    Good sunny cold morning

Thanks for all the warm welcomes - my bird is doing well, still unexplained what happened - but now she is my personal favorite and grandsons have named her buttercup. Overall I am so very pleased with my chicken experience and having a great time with the girls. Today they were dust bathing...

    Good sunny cold morning

Thanks! She laid a small egg which has a bit of dent at the pointy end, she still has not left coop but is a bit perkier, will get some oyster shell to see if that helps, no other symptoms evident that you mentioned

    Good sunny cold morning

As if we don't already have enough worries and bad news - Tigers way down in the Series, Frankenstorm Sandy threatening terrors like we have never seen, outcome of 11/6 at local, state and national levels... I already posted under health emergencies, but though I should provide an intro here...

lethargic bird - I am a novice laying chicken keeper

I have seven six month old birds, moved from a small local farmer about two weeks ago. All has been going well until this morning. I have one girl who did not leave the coop - I checked on her a couple of times to she if she was busy laying, then noticed her struggling to move when I disturbed...
