    Feather loss

I pitched the roof on the nests at a 45 degree angle to discourage the birds from roosting there. They still did, so I put a piece of loose fitting plywood to cover the access. I caught my Buff roosting on top of the plywood's edge, near the coop's roof. I imagine that's how she escaped the...

    Feather loss

Maybe but too early to tell. I read where rats take feathers for their nest. The missing feathers were no where to be found in Chickenville. Noticed 2" diameter holes near the coop so I shoved rat poison down them. Poison was consumed and rats, though I never actually saw any, are dead. I...

    Feather loss

Maybe lice but 3rd chciken is fine. Quite here so nothing upsets them. Molting maybe but I never seen it happen so I'm at a loss there. I ruled out picking when the one showed up with the feathers missing between the legs. Eating laying mash, scratch, noodles, lettuce, cabbage etc. Have good...

    egg whites explode while frying

The chickens are about 9 months old, the eggs are no more than a day old when I cook them. Yes, I use gas heat, but I cook on low heat. Do you think I should let the eggs sit in the fridge for a few days? Yes, I did notice an air bubble. Saw that before when I cooked, but I was right there...

    egg whites explode while frying

I was frying eggs sunny side up, and two of the four egg whites exploded! Really made a mess - went onto the floor, all over the stove, etc. Thankfully no one was right there to get it in their eyes. Is there something wrong with the eggs, or is there something I can do to prevent this...

hen is laying football shaped eggs, then none

She's not molting, lays in the nest but produces nothing. Football shaped eggs amazed me. She was free ranged and laid an egg a day until our rooster got killed by a hawk and after that she no longer free ranges. Laid some eggs while cooped in the run, but now nothing.

hen is laying football shaped eggs, then none

She was laying regular shaped eggs, then started laying football shaped eggs - long and narrow like a football, and then one regular egg, and now no eggs for 2 weeks. She doesn't act sick, eats and drinks just fine, and walks around OK. I'm just wondering what could be wrong?
