    Awful Smell

Not sure where you live but every day or so I put fresh grass clippings in my chicken house and also the brooder, which has 18 two month old guineas, makes it smell wonderful and of course they love it. Been doing that for years, usually start when they are about two weeks old. I do have them...

    oversized turkey recipes?

I can tell you my wife, who use to caters, always cooked awesome big turkeys. She would smear them with butter flavor crisco, or real butter for us, that makes the salt, pepper and garlic stick, and them put a couple of handfuls butter inside the bird. Wrap in the heavy duty foil like you get...

    Pullets won't use roost...

Give them some time, this is acceptable chicken behavior, they will in their own time "go to roost". I like 2"X2" for roost but 2X4 should work. I have one sex link that is 5 months old that insist on roosting on the water trough. I think she has baptised herself more than once.

    blackberries

Give them all you want, mine eat wild ones until their bills are stained. I guess it is good for them, mine are all healthy and happy. Same thing for mulberries, pears and mama's figs which don't have a chance to get ripe.

Vaccinations for 4 Chicks in the City

I am with Judy, no shot and no medicated food unless I have a problem. Feed store guy says if you give them medicated feed all the time, it looses it's effectiveiness. I don't know, just have not had a problem.

    What age do you slaughter?

It is tough but you have to do it, otherwise your hens will be broken down from to much attention. I have some really hard choices to make but what I have done in the past is do it all in one day, put them in the freezer and forget it for about a month. It easier if you wait awhile and you...

    Suet?

Well, guess I am an outlaw but my chicks are healthy and happy. I start giving them a bag full of muched grass at about two weeks, just dump it in my 4' X 8' brooder. They eat as much as they want and trample the rest, it makes the brooder smell much better and also packs down nicely. I clean...

    Another question or two!

Sorry to disagree, but I watched outside chicks grown up eating everything their moms could scratch up. I give mine very fine mulched grass clippings, some fruits and anything they will eat, except potatoes, they are smarter than you think. I order 100 chicks in February and lost 4 the first...

    Crowing Hens!

I remember from my childhood, my grandmother always killed a crowing hen and either made dumplings or dressing. She was convinced it meant a family member would die if a hen crowed. If she is laying and acting normal otherwise, I bet she will quit when the rooster establishes his authority.

    roosting pits

yep, when i built mine, i put a 4'X8' lifting door that opens to the outside, i can lift the door and have access to the ground under the roost pit. Didn't use any wire, just keep grass cutting and hay under there, bet organic mix there is to be found. Then I pull the Kobota right up to it...
