Oh, wow! I'm sorry that happened. That's awful!!!! That really gives me a lot to think about. I might have to sweet talk my hubby into putting up another run.........A least a temporary one.
About 6 weeks ago we had one Barred Rock hatch. We put it in the brooder and our neighbor had some Rhode Island Reds hatch and gave us one so our one little guy wouldn't be alone. They're out growing the brooder and have almost all their feathers now. Is it time to introduce them? If so, anyone...
Thanks for the comments everyone. Just as an update....... Unfortunately, we had 3 babies hatch during the night & that crazy hen pecked them to death & shoved them out of the nest!!! Yet she continued to viciously protect the unhatched eggs! I don't know what we're going to do with...
Thanks for the ideas. We left her with her eggs in the coop. We found one dead chick in the nest this morning and removed it. This afternoon she was out of her box and had a chick hatched in the box and almost dry and another working its way out of its egg..............problem is, she wants...
We have a flock of 12 Barred Rocks, 2 roos & 10 hens. Our very 1st broody successfully hatched 4 chicks (unfortunately, 1 didn't make it) a week & a half ago. We moved her & her eggs to their own smaller pen & shelter that my hubby built for them.
Our second broody is setting & her 1st chick is...
Glad I found this thread! We just had a hen hatch 3 babies, & have another who's 1st chick is hatching right now. We have had some eggs cracked early & had no idea what we could do. We will be trying the wax or Elmer's glue next time!
We have a Barred Rock hen who started setting on 7/4. The 1st baby is in the process of hatching tonight! We already have 1 hen who hatched 3 chicks 2 weeks ago. We are very excited! We have never had any chicks hatched before!! Good luck with your hatching!
I think that it depends on a couple of things............How high is the dog's "prey drive", & how well trained is the dog.
We have a Standard Poodle who doesn't pay our chicks much attention @ all.......& then we have my German Shepherd who is from a working line & has a VERY high prey drive...
Don't put them down!!!!!!
This is a tough situation that you have found yourself in. How long have you been trying to re-home them?
I am assuming that since you said they are chained in a fence, they find a way out of the fence alone..........
Try PetFinder.com, your local papers...
We have an order of chicks due to arrive in a few weeks. I've been reading on a couple of posts about worming chickens & now I have LOTS of questions!
~How often should you worm them?
~At what age should you start?
~Is there anything that is effective, but safe...........won't affect the eggs...
I am so sorry you are having to deal with this.
We had this same thing happen this past Fall. We got some chicks last April & everything was great....until late Sept. when we made the mistake of bringing home a couple of hens from trade day. With in week almost all my birds were sick with the...
Last weekend my hubby & I had to cull our small flock due to a coryza infection caused by introducing new hens............I know now, we have learned our lesson. My question is, what do I need to do to disinfect before we order new chicks & should we wait a certain amount of time? We have about...

We just experienced this same thing, brought new birds into our flock..........! It was a hard lesson to learn, after much research-thought-and going back & forth.....my hubby & I culled our flock of 12 just this morning before sun up & I NEVER want to have to do that again.
I know...
Thank you everyone! It is so very helpful to hear from people who are, or have in the past, experienced this. I hate that I am learning this lesson in this way, for myself & my 2 little boys........We are very attached to 1 roo & 3 of the hens.
I have looked up McMurray hatchery & think that I...
