You can add some Sweet PDZ to the litter to help with the ammonia smell. I have an 8x10 coop, with 39 hens. The littler is not going to make it 6 months with that many hens, I can tell. I just add a bag of shavings tho, when it starts getting smelly, probably every 2-3 weeks. I also stir it...
I had a terrible time trying to find the large cookie tin. Ended up buying one full of cookies at wal-mart. It was $9.88, and the lamp kit was $6.47. Still cheaper than buying a water heater and it is working great. Now, if I can just stay out of those cookies!
10 nest boxes. Brand new. And DH built them to last. With the set up of our coop, raising them would block a window so it's not an option. I think I'm going to try sprinkling cayenne in the nest boxes. I rinse all the eggs after gathering anyway. And it seems the easiest to try first...
Oh, I could never ever touch one of those! I had to google earwigs, as they aren't common here, and omg am I glad! Those make mealworms look easy! I started oat sprouts last night.. Will see how they do. I'm hoping to sprout oats and BOSS together, to mix in with the regular scratch. Oh...

Our hens free range during the day also. In the beginning we left them in the run/coop for a full 24 hrs. Then we only let them out for a couple hours in the late afternoon/evening for a while. Now, even when we free range them all day, they go back to the coop to lay.
Also, make sure nest...
Our dog has started eating eggs out of the nest. She enters through the open run door, then through the pop door. Our hens (and dog) free range, so both doors are open during the day.. Is there a way to make the nest boxes inacessible to the dog? We can't raise them any higher, and I don't...
Our flock enjoyed the turkey carcass, there was a good amount of meat left on it.. I also cooked the neck and giblets in the microwave to feed them tomorrow! I feed them any and all leftover meat as long as it doesn't have a lot of salt.
