    Hi from northern Ontario

Hello and welcome. Northern Ontario. I'm guessing it is cold there. What breeds of chickens do you have, and what is your set-up? Do you have any Chantecler chickens? They were developed in Canada to handle the cold.

    Leghorn Varieties

There are many varieties shown there. I like the Exchequer coloring -- white with black markings throughout. I still like the Single Comb Light Brown Leghorn best. A chicken encyclopedia. There have been many chicken breeds developed in The Netherlands, such as Barnevelder, Dutch Bantam...

    Cackle Hatchery Ameracaunas?

You are up in Northern California, I see. There is some beautiful country up there. I have read that in the past, like in the 1800s and early 1900s, that people saw white eggs as being pure. Now people see white eggs as being commercial and brown eggs as being "farm fresh". :) Both preferences...

    Feather foot? Questions.

I edited this. If the feathered-foot gene is dominant, a chicken should have feathered feet if it has a feathered-foot gene.

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

I suppose it all comes down to how you will sell them -- as eggs, chicks, grown birds, or meat. There are many things to consider, I suppose. I also like things to pay their own way. I am not sure you can apply that to children, though. I have not heard of very many people who have been...

Hatcheries and the month they start shipping?

Most of that is true. But I see hatcheries that have a similar climate start shipping in different months. Hatcheries also ship all over the country, so no matter where a hatchery is located the chicks can be exposed to different temperatures. You are right that some hatcheries also sell common...

"Pure (Heritage) Single & Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds, Rose Comb Rhode Island Whites, Single Comb White & Rose Comb Dark Brown Leghorns." I like your taste in chicken breeds.

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

You make some good points about preserving foundational breeds. Some of the breeds you named were some that were discussed in the original post as being historically important. Breeds like Leghorn, Dorking, and Dominique were mentioned. I like the Light Brown Leghorn. There are single comb and...

    Help! Whole flock killed!

Sure, almost any breed of dog that has not been trained will kill chickens. It would be good to get a puppy and raise it around the chickens so it learns to protect them.

Hatcheries and the month they start shipping?

I see that some of the large hatcheries start shipping this month, December, and others are starting in January or February for the year. Then they often stop shipping around September or so. Why do they have different schedules? I would think it would be safer to start shipping maybe in...

    Cackle Hatchery Ameracaunas?

My father purchased the Cackle Hatchery surprise a few years back and received I believe it was 52 chicks. He was happy and all the chickens lived. He received some Ameraucana/"Easter Egger" chickens in the surprise. Cackle Hatchery has been in business since 1936 and sells 202 varieties of...

    Help! Whole flock killed!

I think it could have been foxes, coyotes, or dogs. I am sorry this happened to you. Leghorn or Dominique would be good for free-ranging and avoiding predators, if you decide to get more chickens. I see the guineas avoided the predator or predators. It is good to have an outside dog on a farm...

    Best rooster for business

Why do you want the offspring of each hen to look like the hen? Are you wanting to sell chickens? I would just suggest picking a breed that you like and getting a rooster of that type to breed with the hens.

    Help! Whole flock killed!

Do you have foxes in your area? This is the chance you take with free-ranging chickens when you are not home. Do you have a dog to guard them? What breeds of chickens do you have? Breeds like Leghorns can usually get away if they have trees or something to fly up on.

    Best rooster for business

It seems you are looking for a rooster to breed but that does not contribute any of his genes. That would be a very unusual rooster, and it would even be very unusual for any creature of any kind. Just out of curiosity, what breeds of hens do you have?
