The past couple days, most of my eggs have cracked from freezing before I could collect them. I'm gone from 7:30-5pm most days for work. Kids don't get off the bus much earlier. I need advice!!! I don't heat the coop, but I wont rule that out if its the only option. I need to save my eggs!!!
I have one barred rock and four easter eggers that are of laying age. The rest of the girls are only 14 weeks old. So far only one EE and the BR have started laying in the past 1.5-2 weeks. This morning I cleaned the coop, and a few hours later found two brown and one blue eggs all in one...
Few questions as I start thinking about winter prep-
1. Do I need to heat my coop?
2. Do I need extra light for my laying hens?
3. How do I know how much ventilation I need? Coop is insulated.
I'm in WI, I know these questions depend highly on the type of winter in the area.
Thanks for any...
Tried to get better pictures- I'm really thinking they just threw in another EE for my freebie.
These two have the fuzzy cheeks:
And these two do not really have fuzzy cheeks.
I cant figure out which is my free chick. I ordered 3 EE, did I just get another EE for my freebie? A & B have muffs, C & D do not.
Front shot of chick A, grey chest compared to the brown chest of the other 3.:
Or is there another thread like this?
I am still trying to decide what to do for boxes and would love to see what others have done. Looking for inexpensive ideas.
Also, how many would you build for about 15 hens?
Thanks!
Yup, I have one BR hen in the bunch too. Im keeping one of the BR roosters, he's really sweet. All 5 of my BO ended up being roosters. Struck out on this batch lol. Have new ones coming, sexed this time, tomorrow. My boys eat a lot of eggs!!!
I share your disappointment. I started with 15 total from a local farm, and ended up with *3* hens. I hope anyway. Only one if the 3 I'm 100%positive is a hen. So I ordered a new batch, from an actual hatchery & sexed this time, that should be here tomorrow.
