I was working up the guts to kill a really mean roo, had him in a cage all day (so, accidently he was fasted and the butchering went alot cleaner)- then since I was going to kill one I thought I may as well do the least impressive of or roos (we had 5) so it took me awhile to catch him- poor guy...
So the second bird I butchered tonight had a very full crop and some thing in the guts popped (fecal matter or gall bladder?) --
I rinsed him out well and now he is in my fridge in a bowl to tenderize - loosely covered with plastic wrap- Is that all that needs to be done, or should I soak him...
First time ever. Not so bad, well not easy or pleasant but not hard- caught bird, held it so it could nt flap its wings tilted it upside down and fit it into a empty bag of feed with one corner cut out (like a killing cone), squeezed its neck so it kinda passed out, quit cut to the throat with...
well did our first two ever tonight. Not a hunter and it wasnt easy but easier than I thought (if you squeeze their neck alittle they kinda pass out and are docile)-- 5 roos were flogging the heck outa our hens- so the mean roo and his skinniest son went...
thats the reasoning for us. Like...
thomassio tangential query but is the duck in your Avatar a drake? Our ducklings (runners, mallards/ roeun, and 1 each swede and Khaki campbell, are between 3 and 6 weeks old but one of the "mallard/ roeun " has that white collar shown in your pic.... does that mean its a drake (he is 4- 5 wks...
Well heres an update, for those who might find it useful. I laid down a deep layer of fresh pine chips in the coop today, refilled the waterer and chick feeder (crumbles, unmedicated vs the pellets we feed the adult birds that is stocked in the big feeder)- didnt want to try a deep clean of the...
So.... 8 eggs only 3 hatched out (1 dud was my fault, I was stirring the eggs around and collecting them not realizing she was broody)- so here is the background: the one hen up high in nest box on 1 egg. one hen in a corner of the coop on 7 eggs. Hatched out 3 mon/tues (I was away, got back...
Wow 17, I am impressed I only have 7 under my Jersey Giant (she is in a weird spot in a corner of the coop though)... and another one has only One! (which I forgot to mark, so not sure what to do since I am now out of town for 4 days)....
Keep us updated- whats your hatch date? ours is 4/23...
Haha you guys are funny (the Prank post)-- also re: breeds -- we have hatchery bred and breeders birds jersey giants, and maybe d/t infrequent egg collection (they build up when I am out of town) both strains have gone broody- I like it cause only a couple are consistently broody so I get a...
Last yr I did end up letting my broody hatch up in the nest box (she wouldnt move to the new spot we made for her)... and our nest boxes are 3 ft plus uff the ground)-- 4 hatched out successfully and made it fine to the ground with her (we lost one later in a freak accident that had nothing to...
Ha just went into town to work for the next few days, will post when I get back (hoping the goats dont break in again and disturb her-- they like to sneak into the coop when I am outa town)...
she looks downright demented- a huge Jersey giant on her clutch....funny old gal...
Can I jump in here? Came home Wed to find my Broody sitting tight (she was over the weekend too but I didnt realize and took the eggs, now I realize she is sitting) my hatch date is the 22nd at the earliest or more likely the 23rd....
Silly girl is under the roosts in a corner of the coop...
Hey Goosegirl6 (do you have geese? we got our first ducklings and would love to add geese someday)-- anyways- I think we are close to you in hatch dates-- came home last wed (its Sat) to find the hen that tried to set eggs last yr (week 2 another hen stole the clutch and hatched out the babies...
Actually if TSC would do the legally responsbile thing and remove the back toe/ mark their day old Mallards they are selling, people would actually know what they are getting!
BTW on another thread there is an OP who says if your ducklings have a double stripe (one accross and one below the eye)...
