Bad luck duck or a horrible mother?

I ended up breaking her from her brood. She just didn’t have it in her I guess! If she goes broody again I’ll let her try but I already have a full plate with the other mama hatching her babies this week.

Need help with first time mama duck

Ok so update: I locked all of the flock away and let mama and her babies out to free range while keeping a close eye. She took them straight to the creek to play. They had some issues with getting stuck in the brush and had a hard time keeping up when there was large limbs to jump over but she...

That’s a good idea! The other hens wouldn’t attack the babies would they?

Need help with first time mama duck

Just added the babies to the run with her(while the flock is free ranging) still, nothing is making her happy. I think she’s wanting to take them to the creek which is deep in the woods. I just worry she’ll abandon the babies due to stress. I’m probably over thinking it though.

Need help with first time mama duck

I tried letting just her out but she insisted on the babies to follow her. The way she exits the coop she has to jump out through the window that the babies can’t. All she did was stand outside the window looking in calling them out. I feel so bad for her she has just been yelling all day!

Need help with first time mama duck

When should I allow this? Currently my flock of chickens and ducks are free ranging and our yard isn’t the best terrain for wobbly little ducks(it’s a very wooded area, lots of sticks, roots, limbs). Should I wait until the flock come back in for the evening? Tomorrow when they are roughly 48...

Need help with first time mama duck

I posted this in the incubating and hatching eggs but didn’t get much of a response. My anacona became a first time mom yesterday hatching out 3 beautiful baby ducklings. To keep the babies safe I closed off her part of the run from the rest of the flock a few days prior to hatching. She...

    Babies hatched now what?

We have hawks, raccoons, and cayotes. If I let them free range I would be supervising it. However I think I’m going to keep her locked up for the time being but now my question is, is normal for her to be this stressed?! Everything I seen was separate her and the babies from the rest of the...

    Babies hatched now what?

My Anacona duck became a first time mama today! She hatched out 3 adorable little babies. I’ve got her locked in the coop by herself while the rest of the flock are locked in the run for the babies protection. She’s set up with feed and water. When she will be ready to take her babies to free...

Bad luck duck or a horrible mother?

I have a broody Pekin, which is exciting! But she does a horrible job. Or maybe it’s just bad luck? I know Pekin’s rarely go broody, does that also mean that when/if they do they just don’t have that motherly instinct? Her first clutch she was sitting on all quit after a few days, as for the...

Sneaking ducklings under broody duck nest

Technically she’s been laying on her nest for over 2 weeks. Something got her first 4 eggs she was sitting on, before I added the recent 6. I would wait until closer to the 28 days before I gave her any ducklings.

Sneaking ducklings under broody duck nest

She’s a first time mother, a Pekin at that so I don’t have high hopes of her being a good mother. Although she is very committed to staying on the nest she’s not good at protecting it from others such as the chickens or humans (compared to my broody Anacona who will attack). Not to mention none...

Sneaking ducklings under broody duck nest

I have a broody duck that has been on sitting on 6 eggs for 9 days and unfortunately I think they are quitters. I want to sneak some 1 day old ducklings in her nest but will that work? I know for chickens it’s possible, but chickens are also kind of dumb in some ways. Will she take to them?

    Broody duck advice

I don’t know exactly how hot it gets in the coop but I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets well over 100 at some points during the day. I possibly could fence them off, but not sure how I would be able design it in a way that they will be able to leave the nest when they need to go eat and drink...

    Broody duck advice

I have a flock of 12 chickens (12 hens, 1 roo) and 4 ducks (2 hens, 2 drakes) that all coop together. Yes I know my girl boy ratio is off. My 2 ducks have gone broody and I’m super excited but I need advice! Is it ok that they hatch their eggs in the coop they share with the chickens? I’m...
