Yup, I agree... I don't think it's got anything to do with the amount of calcium that's being offered. She layed a perfect, hard shell egg this mourning so I've learn't something new again. Thanks for all your help ! :-)
Oh, I know how picky some of them can be, and Yes, they are on layer feed. Being that it's the first time I have chickens I guess I'm being too picky. I live right by a trout stream surrounded by woods with fox, wesal, coyote, mink..etc and have been Very lucky not to have lost one or all I...
Thanks much for your info. Out of the 8 I have, 6 are laying great..so it's down to one of the two that are left. Every day I give all of them 1/4 of a cabage which they all love and all the crushed eggshell they want. I'm 5 minutes from the ocean so I'll be heading there to get some oyster...
This is the second day in a row that one of my hens have layed an egg with no shell. Could there be something wrong with her? She's a Golden Comet.. 25 weeks old and all are healthy freerange chickens and I do have crushed egg shell available for them.
I agree with you both about the process they are going through but she did lay a big one again today ( not as big as the first one)... my scale was out of wack...a friend came over with a proper scale and the egg weighed in at 95 grams. I'll wait to see if she takes a break for a day or two or...
My hens are in their 24 week and have been laying eggs since their 19th week. Their eggs weigh in around the 50 gram size. This mourning all of a sudden I find a giant of an egg in the nesting box. It weighed in at 85.04 grams or 3 1/2 oz. I just wasn't ready for it....I know that they can lay...
Well, you can try what I did...One of my hens started to attack the runt that I was hand feading so I grabbed the attacker by the neck and lowered her head down to the ground and held her there. I wasn't hurting her, just holding her there so she couldn't get away. There was silence in the...
I hunt and fish so it's natural to me to have my own chickens for fresh eggs. I know what the chickens are eating so I know what goes into making up the egg. You can't get fresher food than that. Nice to have something alive walking round the land and it's good for us to take care of animals...
Lucky I like these Golden Comets, they are the only egg laying chicken you can order from the Farmer's CoOp here on Cape Breton Island......they can take the cold weather we can get here and keep on laying.
Thanks much for all your answers. They are great chickens that love to hang around me when I'm working outside and they do give one big brown egg each and every day!
I have looked in the "Breed" section for my Golden Comets and for some reason they are not listed? Is it because they are not a breed of their own? I don't want to call them a half-breed or anything else. If I went out and told them that, they'ed stop laying !
I pick my girls up with my hands over their back and wings with the head in front of me. Then I bring her up to my chest and place her head under my armpit. She goes real quiet and limp cause her head is covered. I can clean her and work on her without fuss. You've got to try this cause it sure...
I don't have any Roo's, just 8 hens who are working on their pecking order. I let them do their thing... to a point, then I step in. I have one runt that I had to hand feed to keep up with the others and now she can stand on her own. One of my hen's decided to pick on her the other day and there...
For me it has to be "climate" due to the fact that if they couldn't take the cold up here we wouldn't have chickens. I think that we would all pick "All Of The Above" if it was there, eh. :-))
