    Swollen face what to do?

Get her well away from the other birds in the first instance. Like, in a comfy nestbox in the garage or something. If there's blood, you really don't want the others seeing that, and if she's poorly enough to want to sit on the nest all the time she needs somewhere quiet to recouperate. Can...

    Noisy Australorps?

My black australorp is almost totally silent. I'd probably say she's the quietest hen I've ever had. In contrast, I have a light sussex who talks non stop and have also had buff orps and RIRs who made a real racket.

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Quote: And thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts and good wishes through what was quite a scary time. I don't think I could have done it without you!!!!

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

She's absolutely fine! Stitches came out nicely, she's eating well and behaving normally, and seems none the worse for her ordeal. In fact, she's famous - I managed to get her story (with a photo) into the September issue of Practical Poultry magazine!

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Tina was really lovely - she said she wouldn't be boarding any more chickens, as she felt that the responsibility of looking after someone else's pets was too scary! Bless her! Daisy really does seem fine now. She's eating normally and there was an impressive amount of solid, normal-looking...

    I can't believe I forgot the chicks!

Don't worry, at four weeks the chicks can regulate their own body temperature. Both of my broodies over the last 12 months have abandoned their chicks to start laying again and go back to their flock at four weeks post-hatch, almost dead-on, and their chicks were all fine. Your babies probably...

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Quote: Well, I was dreading it, but she seems fine! It's often the worry about what might happen, rather than what actually happens, that's the worst part! She has a large lump at the bottom of her incision, which may be scar tissue I suppose (although it's round and squishy, so I fear a...

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Oh well, it has been nice not having to worry about her for a week. I've been thinking that even if she had been ill, there was nothing I could do while I was away anyway, so I'm dreading getting her back and maybe finding that the worrying starts all over again...

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Sorry for the long delay - we've been away on our hols and left Daisy in very capable hands. The vet checked her over the morning before we left and said she seems to be doing nicely and gave her a shot of Baytril, to be on the safe side. Our chicken-sitter tells us that she's been eating and...

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Hmm, I just checked her crop at bedtime, and it has 'something' in it, right at the bottom, where her stitches start. It feels like a fleshy lump, about the size of a large gobstopper, and it is squashy but firm, so I'm sure it isn't food. Could it be a normal part of her anatomy that I don't...

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Thanks Both! Just spoke to the vet and he said that Daisy will be fine outside now and if it helps her spirits then I did the right thing. He also advised to stop the nystatin tomorrow and that the Baytril course should finish on Saturday, so I've decided to put her over to boardings on...

Update (pg 11): Daisy's crop - successful surgery and now eating!

Well, the vet and I kept missing each other yesterday, so I still don't have a professional answer. In any case, Daisy had stopped drinking/eating and was miserable in the downstairs toilet, so I let her out on range. She immediately started drinking and eating again. So there's my answer. She's...
